GUSTAV J. GESSVEIN, OF CRANSTON, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE MOSLER SAFE COMPANY, OF NEWT YORK, N. Y.
SAFE-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 597,407, dated January 18, 1898.
Application filed July 6, 1897. Serial No. 643,516. KNO model.)
To ctZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that l, GUs'rnv J. GEssWEIN, residing at Cranston, county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe-Locks 5 and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming apart of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to safe-locks, and more especially to that class of locks in which the bolts are automatically cast on the closing of the door and automatically retracted at a predetermined time, said operations being edected by mechanism Withinthe safe and inaccessible from the outside.
The object of the invention is to provide a -simple and ecient mechanism for thus automatically casting and retracting the locking-bolts of a safe, and also to so construct and arrange said mechanism with relation tothe bolts and the door of the safe that neither said mechanism northe bolts will be adected by any attempt to force open the door, as by the use of dynamite or other explosive.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for positively locking the bolts in their cast position, so that it will not be possible to retract said bolts against the tension of the spring which casts them.
To these ends the invention consists in the features and combinations hereinafter described, an'd set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, showing a bolt-operating mechanism embodying certain features of the present invention in their preferred form. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts in a different position. Fig. Il is a sectional View on line a it, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view showing the bolt-operating mechanism applied to a screw-door safe. Fig. Gis a sectional plan vieW of the parts shown in Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a View similar to Fig. 5 with the parts in a diderent position.
A block 3 is mounted to slide Within the casing 1 and is provided With a rib 1l, which projects into slot 5, formed in the front of the casing. A spring 6 is interposed between the block 3 and a fixed abutment formed by the end of the casing and tends to force the block 3 away from the end of the casing. The block 3 is recessed at to receive the spring (i, and said spring is supported by a stud 8, which is secured to the block 3 Within the recess 7 and projects Within a recess 9, formed in the end of casing l. A bolt-operating slide 10 passes through the block 3, and a spring 11 is interposed between the end of a recess 13 in block 3 and a shoulder 12,formed on the slide 10, said spring surrounding and being supported by said slide. The block 3 is moved forward to compress the spring G by means of a bell-crank lever lll, the short arm 15 of which is provided with a stud 16, which projects Within aslot 17, formed in the rib 4. The arm 15 of the bell-crank lever ll is also provided with a lug or pin 1S, which engages a slot 19, formed in an arm or lever 20, pivoted to the casing 1. The slot 19 has an offset 2l at its rear end, forminga shoulder for engaging the pin 1S when the block 3 is in its forward position. A pivoted detent 22, adapted to be rocked by a time mechanism, engages the end of the arm 20 and holds the arm 2() in position to prevent the backward movement of the block 3. A collar 23 is secured to the slide 10 and is provided with a lug 24, arranged to be engaged by a detent 25, formed by a laterally-extending shoulder on an arm pivcted at 26 to the casing 1 and acted on by a spring 27. An arm 2S is secured to the pivot of the detent outside the casing and serves to operate said detent against the tension of the spring. A pin 29 limits the movement of the detent under the action of spring 27.
In practice the casing 1 will be arranged in suitable relation to the bolt mechanism or' a safe and the slide 10 connected with said bolt mechanism, so that the bolts will be retracted When the slide is retracted and said bolts will be cast when the slide is advanced. To set the mechanism so that the bolts will be antomatically cast when the safe-door is closed and automatically retracted at a deiini te time, the block 3 is advanced by means of the lever 14C and is locked in position by means of arm 2O and detent 22. lrNhen said block 3 is advanced, the spring 3 is compressed and is so held until the detent 22 is moved by the IOO time mechanism, to which it is attached. The advancing of the block 3 also compre'sses spring l1, since at this time the detent 25 e-ngages the lug 24 and prevents the forward movement of slide lO. The time mechanism being set, the door of the safe is closed, and as it reaches its closed position the arm 28 is rocked by suitable devices and the spring ll forces the slide lO forward, thus casting the bolts of the safe, which remains locked until the time mechanism operates the detent 22, when the spring 6 acts to retract the bolts.
Vith the construction thus far described the bolts would be held cast by the action of spring ll and it would be possible by drilling through the safe-casing and applying pressure to the bolts or bolt mechanism to force back the bolts against the tension of said spring, and it is therefore preferred to provide means for positively locking the slide lO in its advanced position, which in the form shown is as follows: A detent in the form of a lever 30 is pivoted at 3l to the block 3 and has its free end arranged to engage a shoul-l der formed by the pin 32 on the slide l0 when said slide is in its forward position. The lever 30 is mounted in a recess 33 in the side of block 3 and is provided with a cam-surface 34, which rides over pin 35, secured to the casing l, when the block 3 is forced back by spring 6, and thus raises the end of said lever above the pin 32. Vhen the block 3 is moved forward, the end of lever 30 passes over pin 32, as shown in Fig. l, and when the slide lO casts the bolts said lever drops behind said pin, as shown in Fig. 2, and posi-l tively locks said slide in position, Vhile it is preferred to use this form of locking mechanism for positively locking the slide in its forward position and to arrange the detent as shown, it will be understood that other forms of mechanism maybe used or the mechanism be differently arranged without departing from the invention.
In safes as heretofore commonly constructed which are provided with automatic mechanism for casting and retracting the bolts it has been customary to mount the bolts and bolt mechanism upon the door, with the result that the bolts and bolt mechanism are subjected to any jar or shock to which the door is subjected, so that the bolt mechanism is liable to be injured or rendered defective as a result of an attempt to force open the door of the safe. It is accordingly preferred to provide the holt-operating slide of the automatic bolt-operating mechanism with means for disconnecting the bolt mechanism and said slide when said slide is retracted, whereby the bolt mechanism may be mounted in the casing of the safe while the mechanism for automatically operating the bolts may be mounted upon or mounted to swing with the door, and this means preferably consists of a hook which is pivoted upon the end of the bolt-operating slide and is rocked into engagement with the bolt mechanism when the slide is advanced and is rocked upon its pivot to disengage said mechanism when the 'slide is retracted.
As shown in the drawings, a hook 36 is pivoted at 37 to the end of slide lO and is pro vided with two shoulders 3S and 39, which lie upon opposite sides of an abutment 40, formed on the end of the casing l. When the slide l0 is retracted, the shoulder 3S engages abutment 40, rocking the hook 36 into the position shown in Fig. l, and when said slide is advanced the shoulder 39 rides over the abutment 40, rocking said hook into the position shown in Fig. 2 and holding said hook in said position.
The mechanism above described may be used upon any form of safe and may be connected with the bolt mechanism of the safe in any suitable manner, and in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 is shown one manner of applying said mechanism t'o the screw-door safe illustrated in Patent No. 575,306, granted to M. MoslerJanuary l2, 1897. As shown in said views, the door 4l of the safe is provided with a lug 42, arranged to be engaged by a bolt 43, pivoted to the casing 44 at 45. The bolt 43 is provided with a slot 46, engaged by a pin on the end of an arm 47, secured to a stud 4S, mounted in a bracket 49, secured to the casing. An arm 50 is secured to the other end of stud 4S and is provided with a pin at its free end, arranged to be engaged by the hook 36, as shown in Fig. 7.
The casing l may be mounted upon the door, but is preferablysecured upon the yoke 5l, which supports the door of the safe, and a time mechanism 52 is connected to operate the detent 22 in a well-known manner. The arm 2S is arranged to be engaged by a lug 53, secured to the end of the screw 54, which is prolonged, so that it projects beyond the inner face of yoke 5l. Instead of mounting the bolt mechanism upon the casing said mechanism may be mounted on the door orv upon the yoke 5l, or two bolt mechanisms may be used, as shown in the drawings. As shown, the second mechanism consists of a bolt 55, pivoted to the yoke 5l and operated by means of a lever 56, connected to the slide 10 by means of a link 57, which is pivoted to a projection 58 on the collar 23. The opera tion is as follows: The automatic mechanism is set, as shown in Figs. l and 5, and the door of the safe swung into register with the circular openingin the casing. The door is then turned upon its axis to close said door, and as it reaches its closed position the lug 53 strikes arm 28 and releases the slide 10, which is forced forward by the spring ll. This forward movement of slide l0 causes the hook 36 to engage the pin on arm 50 and to move said arm into the position shown in Fig. 7, thus operating the bolt 43 to engage lug 42 and lock the door in position. This movement of the slide also swings the bolt 55 above the lug 53, and said bolt also locks the door in position. The parts remain in this position until the time mechanism operates the detent 22, when the slide lO is retracted by the spring 6. The backward movement of the slide l0 moves the bolts 43 and 55 out of engagement With the lugs 42 and 53, thus unlocking the safe-door. After the bolt L3 has been operated the hook 36 is rocked to disengage the arm 50, so that the swinging movement of the door will not be interfered with.
W'hile it is preferred to use two bolt mechanisms and to pivot the bolts and to arrange said bolts as shown, it will be understood that a single bolt mechanism may be used, or that sliding bolts may be used, if desired, and the arrangement of said bolts and the devices for connecting them with the automatic mechanism varied Without departing from the invention.
