MFE ES. PMTMTHOGMPQIER. WABHINGYON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT PHILIP RILEY, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEDNIETHOD 0F VSEGURING SHOE-TiPS.
Specification for-ming part of Letters Patent No. 59,656, dated November 13, 1866.
panying drawings, and to the letters of refer` ence marked thereon.
My invention consists in sewing tips to thc toes of boots and shoes by a loop-stitch, as herein shop n.
`Figure l is a perspective View of a shoe with a tip secured to it by my invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective View of 4the toe of a shoe with a tip partially secured to it. Fig.' 3 is a tip, showin g a loop-stitch around the margin of it.
In Fig. l, A1 is a shoe. B1 is atip sewed on the toe by the loop-stitch set forth in the within specification.
In Fig. 2, A2 is the toe of a shoe. B2 is a tip partially sewed onto the toe. a? a2 a2, 85o., are loop-stitches set in the margin of the tip. b2 b2 are waxed threads by which the tip is sewed to the sole of the shoe.
In Fig. 3, B3 is a tip. a? a3 a3, &c., are loop- Fig. 3,) the novelty of securing the tips may be noted.
The sole and upper leather being pressed apart by a blunt-edged tool, the tip is pnt on, and the waxed thread with which it is sewed is passed through the sole, and then through the first loop and sole and drawn tight, which.
turns in the edge of the tip and secures it to the shoe. Each successive loop is then sewed to the sole, giving the tip the appearance of having been lasted in77 when the shoe was made, and making it equally as durable.
Ido not confine myself to a loop-stitch sewed around the margin Oi a tip, as a chain-stitch may be used, nor alone to putting Ontoe-tips, as my invention may be applied to heel tips or patches; neither do I claim any device previously invented or patented for securing tips to the toes of boots and shoes; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Securing tips to the toes of boots and shoes by stitching around and through the margins of the tips a loop or chain stitch, and sewing the upper side of the loop or chain stitch to the sole, as herein set forth and described.
l. PHILIP RILEY. mark.
