INVENT 'UI? WITNESSES NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. MACKEY, OF NEW YQRK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO W. HARRISON ALBACH, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,522, dated January 4, 1898.
Application filed February 16, 1897. Serial No. 628,622. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. MAOKEY, a citizen of. the United States, and a resident of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a lamp with a perfect combustion chamber, whereby the strength of the flame is materially increased for illuminating and likewise heating purposes.
Another object is to produce an odorless lamp, whereby the flames can be increased or decreased by the raising or lowering of the wick without creating smoke or smoking.
Another object is to separate the wick from the body of oil in the oil-reservoir.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a lamp embodying my invention, a part of the perforated lifting tube or sleeve being shown in full lines. Fig. 2 is a detached bottom view of the chimney-holder. Fig. 3 is a detached top view of the chimneyholder.
Letter A represents a lamp with stand or base B, oil reservoir or holder 0, and chimney D. The oil-holder is provided with a central opening into which is placed the partition-tube E, provided with a perforated cap 6 and supporting the wick-tube F, provided with an annular space for the insertion of the wick G. The projecting portion 0 of the oil-holder is provided with holes for the admission of air into the central opening of the wick-tube. (See arrows.) The top of the wick tube supports the flame deflector H, the side walls of which are perforated, (see Fig. 1,) and in the interior of the perforated tubular portion h is inserted the perforated cone J (See Fig. 1.)
The partition-tube E supports the chimneyholder K, with annular space is divided off by perforated wall k and perforated top plate 70 The top of this holder K supports the airdeflector M, constructed after, or nearly so, the shape shown.
Oil is admitted to the wick from the oilholder by the tube or pipe 0.
The wick is raised and lowered by the removable lifter P, which is inserted through an opening in the oil-holder at m, (see Fig. 1,) and the horizontal member 19 enters any one of the holes 0 of wick-lifting ring or collar or sleeve R. (See Fig. 1.) To enable the wicklifter P to travel easily and steadily within the oil-h0lder,-I place therein the guide or steadier S, (see Fig. 1,) with holes 8 to permit the oil to reach the wick.
The object of the perforated cone in the flamedeflector is to equalize the current of air coming up the central opening of the wicktube and likewise distribute it more evenly against the disk of the deflector than could be done otherwise if the cone was not used. The deflector on the chimney-holder deflects or concentrates the air toward the ignited portion of the wick and efiectually draws the heat of the flame or light away from the oilholder of the lamp.
It will be observed that the wick is fed from the oil-holder by an opening which frees the wick from the sediments of the oil, which destroy the usefulness of the wick.
Because of the air-space T between the partition-tube and wick-tube I am enabled to prevent the oozing of the oil upon or onto or through the oil holder or fount, thereby making the handling or carrying of the lamp unaccompanied with soiling of the person of the carrier and prevents odor from the oil, and it also keeps the reservoir or fount clean.
What I claim is- 1. In a central-draft lamp, the chimneyholder K provided with an annular space inclosed by a solid wall and a perforated wall, a solid cover, perforated top plate, and curved deflector placed on top of said holder as shown, in combination with the partitiontube E over which it is'placed and supported, as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a central-draft lamp the chimneyholder K provided with solid outer wall, perforated inner wall, solid top, perforated top plate, and curved deflector, placed on top of said holder as shown substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of February, 1897.
JOHN C. MACKEY.
