LOCKING DEVICE FOR ELEVATOR-DOORS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY BECHTEL and LOUIS FRITZ, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for'Elevator-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of our invention are to provide simple and efficient means which are automatically and positively operated by the controller of an elevator to keep the elevatordoors at all floors securely locked while the elevator-car is in motion and to permit of the opening of the doors when the elevator-car is at a standstill.
The invention consists of a lever for each elevator -door hinged to the door-jamb or framing and attached with its free end to the controlling rope or rod of the elevator, a projecting strip on the door adapted to register with the said lever, and cam-shaped projec- -tions on said lever or strip to butt against the respective ends of the door strip or lever when the elevator-car is in motion.
Our invention further consists of the improvements hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be more fully understood drawings, forming part thereof, in which-- Figure 1 is a section through an elevator-,
shaft, showing a door, the elevator-controlling rope, and our improved devices for locking and unlocking the elevator-door. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, showing the hinging of the door-locking lever to the doorjamb. To each door-jambD' is pivotally connected, by means of the plate (l and pin or bolt d', a lever G, which is provided with a slot g, running from the pivoted end a distance (the width of the door) to the other end, which is suitably connected to the controller C. The pivoted end of the lever G is also provided with cam-shaped projections g' g2, for a purpose to loe presently described.
On the outside of each door D is secured a strip d2, adapted to enter-the slot g of the lever G whenever the latter is in a horizontal position; but when the lever G is moved about its center d' out of such position one of the projections g or g2 comes in contact with the strip d2 and prevents the door from being opened. Each of the doors D is provided with the usual lock d3, to be manipulated only from the inside of the elevator-shaft-z'. e., from the elevator-car.
The operation of our new door-locking devices for elevators is as follows: Each of the levers G at the dierent floors F is pivoted to the door-jambs D and fastened with its free end to the elevator-controller C, so that when the latter is moved downward, as in Fig. 3, in order to let the car B descend the levers G are brought into position, so that the projections g2 thereof come in contact with the end of the strip d2 on the door D, and when the controller C is in position to stop the movement of the car B the levers G are horizontally disposed, as shown in Figs. 1 and Ll, so that the particular door D at which the car B is stopped may be opened from within the car by releasing the lock d3. If, then, the particular door D is opened, the strip cl2 thereof engages the slot g and in this way prevents the moving of the controller C to cause the up or down movement of the carB. In other words, the door D at this as Well as on any other licor must be closed before the controller C can be operated to move the ear B. The doors D at the other floors F are at such instances of course secured against opening from the outside or hallway by the locks d3. Should a door when hastily shut rebound, the lever IOO G can either be not moved by the controller C or when capable of being moved by the latter it will cause the prompt locking of the door D by means of the lock d3. In the latter case the slightly-rounded-olf corners g4 at the pivoted end of the lever G will bear against the strip d2 of the door D and push it shut, so that the lock d3 is caused to perform its function. Vhen the car B ascends, as shown in Fig. 5, by moving the controller C in an upward direction the projection g' is brought against the end of the strip d2 of the door and thereby locks the same until the car B is stopped again by the downward movement of the controller C.
In Figs. 6 and 7 is shown an elevator-shaft in which a modified form of door-locking device is illustrated. In this case the groove g, which was provided in the lever G, is on the door D and registers with the lever or bar G', which, similar to the lever G, is hinged at d', by means of the bushing d, to the doorjamb D'. The controller-rope C in this instance is provided with the buttons c, clamped by means of bolts onto the rope C, so that they may be adj usted up or down to suit the positions of the various levers G'. The projections g' g2, formerly on the lever G, are now on the door D and serve the saine purpose, as Will be readily understood.
It is evident that many modifications in construction as well as application of our devices as before described can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the nature and objects of our inve1ition,\vl1at We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination in an eleva-tor with a car and doors thereof, of a controller for the motive power, a strip secured to cach door, a lever hinged near one end thereof to each doonjamb and adapted to butt against the said strip and to register with the same, said lever being connected with its free end to the said controller, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A device for securing elevatordoors from being opened When the elevator-car is running and releasing the said doors when the said car is at rest,said device comprising a strip on one side of the door, a grooved lever hinged to a door-jamb and means for causing the operation of the elevator-car, said means being connected to the free end of the said lever, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination in an elevator with a car and doors thereof, of a controller for the motive power, a strip on each door, a grooved lever hinged near one end thereof to the Wall and connected With its free end to the controller, said lever adapted to receive the said door-strip when the controlleris in position to arrest the movement of the car, and projections on opposite sides of the lever adapted to butt against the end of the strip when the controller is in position to cause the Inovement of the said car, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
