SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 596, 147', dated December 28, 189'?.
Application tiled April 26, 1897. Serial No. 633,856- (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that LHoUGHroN DEDwAnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at lliseville, in the county of Barren and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Harrows; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer* ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harrows of that class wherein the harrow-teeth are placed upon rollers or drums which are adapted to revolve when the harrow is drawn over the ground.
The objects of my invention are to provide a harrow of that class that will be simple in construction, that may be adj usted to various widths, and that will harrow the ground and at the same time crush the clods and roll the surface.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of parts shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the following speciiication.
In the drawings, Figure lis a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a front view of the frame with the rollers removed. Fig. ,a shows the pivoted brace-rod both connected and disconnected, and Fig. 5 is an edge view of one of the journals whereby the front ends of the rollers are secured to the frame.
rlhe frame, which is V-shaped in outline, consists of a central piece A and the side pieces B, which are secured at the forward ends to the sides of the center piece A near the front by means of the hinges C. rlhe center piece A is provided with a clevis 7L at its front end, to which horses may be attached or hitched, and near the rear end are a series of openings i, which receive the pin j. The center and side Apieces are secured together at their rear ends by means of a pivoted brace-rod formed in two sections D and E, which are pivotally connected in the center by a bolt or rivet t. The outer ends of the rod have openings adapted to receive bolts Z,
whereby said outer ends are each secured to the side pieces B, and the inner ends of each section have the openings m to receive the bolt 7o, and in addition thereto the section D is provided with a shoulder n, having an opening o, which is adapted to receive the pin j and thereby connect the brace-rod at the desired point with the center piece A. It will be seen that the vdistance between the rear ends fr of the side pieces B may be increased by removing the pin j, drawing the pivoted rod back on the center piece A, and again placing the pin in the openings o and fi in the brace-rod and center piece at the desired point. To the side pieces B are secured the front and rear depending roller-journals F and G, the front journals F being formed with angles s for the purpose of throwing the journal-bearings under the side pieces B and thereby bringing the front ends of the rollers close together, so as to prevent leaving an open space in the center.
The rollers H are slightly cone-shaped with the small end in front and are provided with metal bands t at proper intervals throughout their length, to which the harrow-teeth o are suitably secured. A journal d in the front and rear ends of the rollers H enters the bearings c in the lower ends of the depending roller-journals F and G. 1When the harrow is drawn over the ground, the rollers H re volve and the teeth 'o will harrow the ground, while the face of the rollers will crush the clods and roll the surface.
It is a well-known fact that the soil will retain moisture much better when the surface is somewhat packed than when loosely thrown up by the ordinary harrow. My improved harrow is designed to pack the earth slightly and at the saine time harrow it, thereby saving the time and labor oi going over the ground again with a land-roller.
it will be understood that the ground will be more thoroughly harrowed when the rear ends of the rollers are close together than when extended, and the pivoted brace-rod is provided for the purpose of adjusting the rollers to meet the requirements of the soil operated upon, as a loose soil needs less harrowing and more rolling, while a firm damp soil requires the reverse.
IOO
Having described iny invention, what I clziiin, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, ic*- l. ln zi herrow of 'the class described, the Combination of the freine consisting of the center piece A, hziving openings t, the side pieces l, secured to the eenter piece Il, by the hinges C, and `provided with depending roller-journals F, and G, said side ind eenter pieces being` zidjustebly secured et their rear ends by ineens oi' the pivoted brace-rod consisting of the section l, haring n shoulder n, with in opening o, to receive e. pinj, and the section E, pivoted te Section B; coneshziped rollers il, having the bant s if, to which tre secured the herrow-teeth r, .seid rollers being provided with the journals d, which enter the bearings e, in the depending roller-journals l?, end G, all substantially :is shown ind described.
2. rlhe eonibinntien in i hnrrow having; in adjustable freine, of the piioted brnee-rod consisting of two sections D, and E, the outer end of eaeh seet-ion having an oiiiening,` whereby they are seeured Vto the eide pieces l, of the 'iremos by the bolts Z, the inner ende hn ing` the openings/m, to receive ine boltl.'y id the section D, having the shoulder n, with the opening' o, said opening,` beingidzipted to receive L pinj, which lies therein :ind in one of the openings t', in the center piece A, with said freine, and the conical rollers H, having` the bends V/, :ind the ha-rrow-teeth e, Secured thereto, said rollers being' connected with the frnnie by ineens of the depending roller-journals, substantially as set forth.
3. t roller-herrow having e V-shziped Ldj usteble i'rzinie eonsistingof the Center piece A, and the side pieces B, secured to seid eenter piece A, it their front ends by the hinges C, and ndjustably secured nein' their rear ende by the pivoted brace-rod formed is shown in two Sections, with the cone-shaped rollers lhhziving jourinils d, connected with the freine by nic-zins ol' the depending,` roller-journztls F, and G, eztid rollers Carrying bands '/f, to which are attached teeth r, is shown and described.
l'n testimony whereof l zrl'lix my signature in presence ol' two witnesses.
