SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,125, dated December 28, 1897.

Be it known that I, SANFORD OJROOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of Seneca, State of New York, have Vinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vises,and is designed, primarily, as an improvement upon the construction shown in the Patent No. 533,946, granted to me February 5, l89, the vise being of the same class as that shown in said patent, but differing therefrom in many respects, which will be hereinafter fully explained. Y
The present invention has for its object, among others, to provide a suitable standard for supporting the fixed jaw in lieu of having to secure it to a post or support. Y I dispense with the `weight suspended from the pawl in my prior construction and employ a crankshaft beneath the pawl, which crank-shaft is suitably mounted in b earings on the Xed jaw and connected with the foot-lever. I provide a novel construction of lift-pin and means for actuating the same. I employ a sleeve and a cam-face as a pin for adjustment for use without the lift-pin when desired. The acting face of the lever constitutes a lock, and on this lever I employ a rocking rod connected with a rocking cam for actuating the pin. I aim,further,at improvements in the details of construction, whereby the device as a whole is rendered cheaper, durable and more efficient in use, capable of liner adjustment, and not liable to become damaged or to get out of order.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafterappear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. v
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings,which,together with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improve-v ating-lever,liftpin,and rocking rod and cam. Referring now to thedetails of the drawings by letter, A designates the post or upright, which'may be secured at its lower end inany suitable manner, as in the socket a, which may rest or be fastened to the floor.
A designates a portion of the bench to which may be secured or upon which may rest the bracket or lug ct of the fixed jaw B of the vise. This iixed jaw has a depending shank B', and this shank or depending portion, as well as the shank O of the movable jaw O, is formed hollow, with the adjacent sides of the two -shanks open, as indicated, and these two shanks are connected by the crossed arms D D', the upper ends of which are pivotally attached, as at d, to the Shanks of said jaws in any suitable manner, and at their points of intersection the two arms are pivotally connected on a suitable pivot d. The shank B is secured to the post or support A by suitable means, as bolts b, as indicated in Fig. l.
E is the ratchet-rod, which may be of' any requisite length and providedl upon its under face for a portion of its length with teeth, as seen at e, and near its outer end upon the under side it is formed with a lug or projection e,which is adapted to engage ina recess e2, formed in the boss or enlargement c' of the jaw C, as shown best in Fig. 4, to prevent turning of the rod, whileallowing endwise movement thereof. The otherend of the rod passes through the boss or enlargement c of the jaw B, and F is a pawl pivotally mounted, as at f, within an opening f', formed at the upper end of the shank or depending portion IOO B of the jaw B, as seen best in Fig. 3, the inner or acting end ot the pawl working in said opening and engaging the teeth ou the under side of the ratchet-rod E within the enlargement or boss Z/,as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l and as seen clearly in Fig. 3. The outer end of this pawl is weighted, as seen at f2, and its under face rounded or concaved, and this under portion is engaged by the horizontal portion got the crank-shaft G, the horizontal portions of said shaft being mounted in suitable bearings g' on the bracket tt or other stationary part of the fixed jaw, and into the eyes g2 at the upper ends thereof are hooked or otherwise engaged the rods or links G, the lower ends of which are pivotally connected in any suitable manner with the foot-lever ll, which is formed as an integral part of the toot-treadle H, the metal being bent upon itself, as at h', and the footlever and the treadle eatendingr at substantially the right angle shown in Fig. l, the rearend ot thetreadle being pivotallymounted, as at h', in lugs or brackets h2 on the upright A. This gives to the footlever some resiliency and permits of the more gradual starting of the parts in their movement-when the footis placed thereupon and thus lessens the liability of iuj u ry to any of the parts.
Il2 is an arm formed with a yoke 71,3 at its lower end,whieh embraces the foot-lever and the foot-treadle, and this horizontal portion passes loosely beneath the latter, so that the foot-lever and foot-treadle have movement independent thereof; but the yoke is depressed as the foot-treadle is depressed. The upper end of this arm H2 is biiui'cated and receives the curved arm or lever H3, pivotally mountcd,as at 7i, in au opening in the upright A and its upper end bearing against the arm D against its pivot, as illustrated in Fig. l., so that slight pressure upon the foot lever or treadle will open the jaws after the pawl has been disengaged from the path of the ratchet-rod, as will soon be explained. The upper end ol the rod H2 is pivotallyconneci'ed with the curved arm Il near its bend, as seen at 7e3 in Fig. l.
'lhe outer end oi the ratchet-rod carries an extension l in the iorm of a 'Ilat plate, as seen in Fig. (i, and is provided with a plurality of vertical openings i, and the connecting portion l between this iiat plate and the rod proper is also flattened, as seen in said Fig'. t' as well as in Fig. 4.
J is the operating cam-lever. lt is bifurcated at one end, as seen best in Figs. l and 4, and this bifurcated end embraces the extension l of the ratchet-rod, and the bifurcation is provided with a plurality of openingsj, disposed vertically through the upper and lower portions thereof in line with each other, the lever being pivotally mounted on the eX- tension by means of a removable pin J, which may be passed through either set of openings in the end of the lever and in the extension,
as occasion may require, to change the leverage and to increase the cam-surface, the cam portions of the lever acting against the outer face of a sliding collar K, the inner' portion 7.; of which is designed to slide within the sleeve K', disposed within the bore of the enlargement or boss c' ot the jaw C, as seen most clearly in Fig. Lt. sleeve K is cam-shaped, as seen at 7o in Figs. 4 and 5, while the inner face of the body portion o't the collar K is cam-shaped, as seen at 7a2 in Fig. G. The collar K is provided with a pin K3, as seen in Figs. l, 2, and t-, by means of which the collar can be adjusted to vary the movement of the jaw. rlhe peculiar shape of the acting t'ace of the operating camlever constitutes a lock, so that the parts will be automatically held in any of theiradjusted positions. The outer face of the enlargement or boss c' of the jaw C has at its upper edge an overhanging tlange c2, as seen in Figs. l, 2, 4, and 5, which protects the cam-faces of the sleeve and collar, as shown.
L is a rod arranged parallel with the operating-lever, and is mounted to rock in eyes or staples or suitable means l upon the upper face of the lever, as shown. Near its outer end it is provided with the offset portion Z', forming a handhold by which the rod or lcver L may be rocked upon the operating-lever. This inner end is extended at right angles to its length, as seen at L', andthe free end of this portion is bent 'at right angles to the length thereof, as seen at L2, and this portion L2 is passed loosely through the roeking lever M, being held by a nut m, as indicated in Figs. l and 2, and the other end of this lever M has projecting laterally therefrom a horizontally-disposed eye or ring M', (seen best in Fig. 4,) which engages beneath a shoulder m of the lift-pin N, which is mounted to workin one of the openings in the bifurcated end of the operating cam-lever and adapted to bear against the outer edge of the fiat extension I of the ratchet-rod, as indicated best in Fig. 2. The acting face of this pin is formed with a socket or notch N', the upper portion of which is formed with a series or notches or steps N2, wliileits lower portion is rounded or cam-shaped, as seen at N3, the intermediate portion being straight and vertical. This pin is lifted by the rocking ot the rocking rod or lever on the operating cam-lever when it is desired to open the jaws, but it automatically drops as the lever is moved around to close the jaws and forms an lautomatic lock to prevent opening of the jaws.
It will thus be observed that by my improved construction I obtain three ditierent adjustments--namely, that by the ratchet-bar and its engaging-pawl; second, the cam-sleeve and its cooperating cam-lever, and, third, the drop-pin just described.

cated end of the operating-lever and its other end held upon the vertical portion P of the pin or bolt P, which is secured in the shank of Ithe jaw C just below its boss or enlargement, as seen best in Fig. 4.
It is often desirable when not using the vise to have the lever J thrown up into avertical or other position, so as to be out of the way. For this purpose I provide a locking bolt, latch, or pin cx, removably inserted through a fixed portion of the vise, as the jaw C, (see Fig. 4,) and into one of a series of holes or depressions in the sleeve eX, the sleeve having the groove or slot e2 to receive the iin e other either by a pin or sliding collar PX.

It will now be seen that a severance of the rod P andv a disconnection of the pin or latch 0X from the sleeve eX will permit a rotation of the ratchet-bolt, its surrounding sleeves, and of the lever .I ,connected with said ratchetbolt, when the locking-pin CX may be again forced into a seat, hole, or depression in the sleeve ex, so as to retain the parts in al position wherein the lever J will be held in a vertical or other desired plane. This modification may be required on account of the particular surroundings or by a peculiarity of the work being held in the jaws of the vise, and if the lever is to be operated in such changed position allthat would be necessary to do would be to provide the rod E with ratchet-teeth upon two or more sides, as will be readily understood.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacriiicing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y l. The combination with the jaws and their supporting-standard, of a foot-treadle pivotally mounted on the standard and having an integral foot-lever, the ratchet-rod, its pawl, a crank-shaft arranged beneath the pawl, a connection between the crank-shaft and the foot-lever, the tail end of the pawl being weighted and curved upon its under side; substantially as described.
2. The combination with the jaws and the ratchet-rod, of a pivotally-mounted pawl having a weighted tail portion, a crank-shaft having its crank arranged beneath the weighted end of the tail, a pivoted treadle, and connections between the same and the crank-shaft; substantially as described.
3. The combination with the ratchet-rod and the jaws, of a pawl mounted to engage the ratchet-rod, a collar revolubly mounted on the rod and having a cam-face, and a camlever acting upon said collar, as set forth.
4. The combination with the ratchet-rod and the jaws, of a pawl mounted to engage lthe ratchet-rod, a collar revolubly mounted on the rod and having a cam-face, and a camlever acting upon said collar, the movable jaw having a sleeve with a cam-face adapted to cooperate with the cam-face of the collar; substantially as described.
5. The combination with the jaws and their crossed pivotedarms, of the ratchet-rod, its pawl, the collar revolubly mounted on the rod, and a lever having a cam portion acting upon said collar and forming a lock; substantially as described.
6. In a device of the character described, a combined foot-lever and foot-treadle formed of a single piece bent between its ends, with the treadle and lever extending in the same vertical plane at different angles; substantially as described.
7 In a device of the character described, a combined foot-lever and foot-treadle formed of a single piece bent between-its ends, with the treadle and lever extending in the same vertical plane at 'different angles, t-he footlever being resilient; substantially as described.
8. The combination with the jaws and their supporting-standard, of a combined integral treadle and foot-lever pivotally mounted on the standard,v a yoke loosely receiving the treadle, a lever neartheir connecting portion, and a curved lever pivotally mounted on the standard and pivotally connected with the IOO upper end of the yoke; substantially as del scribed.
9. The combination with the movable jaw having an enlargement with an overhanging flange upon its outer face, of a sleeve mounted in said boss, the ratchet-rod, and a collar revolubly mounted on the rod and having a proj ection whereby it may be revolved; substantially as described.
10. The combination with the movable jaw having an enlargement, of an overhanging a'nge at the top, of a sleeve in said enlargement having an outer cam-face, the ratchetrod, anda collar revolubly mounted thereon and having an inner cam-face; substantially as described.
l1. In a device of the character described, the combination with'the jaws and the ratchetrod, of means for accomplishing three independent adjustments; substantially as described.
12. The combination with the jaws and the ratchet-rod, and its pawl, of an operating-lever having a cam-face and pivotally mounted on the outer end of the ratchet-rod, of a spring connecting the operating-lever with a fixed part on the movable jaw; substantially as described.
13. The combination with the jaws and the ratchet-rod; of an operating-lever pivotally IIO connected with thc ratchetrod and havinga cam-face, a collar revolubly mounted on the rod against which the cam-face is designed to act, anda spring having one end connected with the lever near its pivot, and the other end mounted on the shank of the movable jaw; substantially as described.
