ACETYLENE-GAS GENERATOR.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK D. DIBBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-GasGenerators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same- My invention has for its object to provide certain improvements in that class of gas apparatus which are used either as generators or holders and which involve a pair of telescoping sections, one of whichis water-seated and mounted for movement within the other.
This class of apparatus is now in general use for the purposes of generating or holding or generating and holding acetylene gas. It may here be stated that in practice these devices, when used to control the production of acetylene gas by the contact of water and calcic carbid, have been found seriouslydefective in that the movable telescopic part is liable to be thrown out of Working position by very rapid over-productions of gas. This overgeneration of gas is usually due to the fact that the calcic-carbid bodies become too deeply submerged, so that they carry an ex-' cessive amount of water with them when they are removed from contact with the main body of the water, thus continuing the generation of gas after a time when it should have been stopped. When the movable section of the tank is thus thrown out of working position, the gases will of course escape into the room in which the apparatus is located, and fires, explosions, and many other damages will naturally follow.
To obviate the above dangers and render the apparatus more safe is the object of my invention.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The preferred form of my invention, as well as a modification thereof, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters refer to like parts throughout both views.
Figure 1 is a view, principally in side elevation but with some parts broken away and others shown in section, illustrating the preferred form of my invention; and Fig. 2 illustrates a modification thereof.
Referring to Fig. 1, CL indicates the fixed tank-section, provided with a flanged false bottom a and a draw-off cook or faucet a at the central portion of its conical bottom, and 0. indicates the inverted cup-like tank-section, which is mounted for vertical telescopic movement within the fixed tank-section (t,and is water-seated by means of a column of water 2, contained in said tank a. The movable tank-section a is provided with a carwater-seated telescopic sections, of which b indicates the fixed member and Z) the verticallymovable member of the same. The fixed section aof the generator and the fixed section b of the holder or storage-tank are in communication through a valved gas-conveying pipe 19 This gas-conveying pipe b extends upward, with one end above the level of the column of water contained in the storage-gasometer b and with .its other end above the column of water contained in the generator. The arrangement of this pipe connection is of the most ordinary construction and for the purposes of this case is not thought to need further illustration.
The extreme upward movement of the n1ovable section a of the generator is limited by means of chains a (as shown, four in number,) which are rigidly secured at their up per ends to said movable section a and at their lower ends to eyes a" on the upper edge of the fixed tank-section a. If desired, the lower ends of these chains 61.5 may be removably secured to the eyes a by means of snaphooks a". The upward movement of the movable section Z) is limited by chains b which are secured at their upper ends to the section b and at the lower ends to section I).
As shown, both the generator and holder or storage-tank are supported by a bench or table g, which is cut away, as shown at g, to permit the discharge from the oy erflow-pipes a a and from the faucet a into the catch basin or box 0.
The operation of my improvements will be substantially as follows: The ordinary generating action of the generator is a matter of such general knowledge that further commentthereupon is not deemed necessary. If, however, a too rapid or sudden production of the gas therein contained should take place, the movable tank-section a will of course be thrown upward to the limit permitted by the chains a The gases then, instead of being permitted to rise, will force the water .2 contained in the tank-section a downward,which will of course cause the same to rise in the narrow circular compartment formed between the sections CL and (0 until it reaches the altitude of the escape-passages a where it will find a ready overflow through the overflow-pipes a a, through which it will be discharged into the catch-basin o. By this means the gas will be held in the generator while the water will be blown out thereby. It must be evident that this safety device will render practically impossible any serious accident from an explosion of the gases in the generator or holder. Obviously the fixed section b of the storage tank or holder might also be provided with similar overflow-pipes, but I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate this feature in the drawings.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 2, f indicates the fixed section of the gas apparatus and f the telescopically-movable section of the same. In this modification the fixed tanlcseetion f is provided with perforated brackets f and the movable section f is likewise provided with perforated brackets f. The upward movement of the movable tanksection f is limited by means of bolts 1, which work through the cooperating pairs of brackets f f and are provided with headed ends f What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. The combination with the fixed and exterior memberof a pair of gasometer-sections, of one or more overflow tubes or passages opening from the upper portion thereof, at a point or points above the normal altitudes of the sealing liquid therein contained, the telescopically-movable gasometer-section, liquidseated within said fixed section, and a stop device for limiting the upward movement of said movable gasometensection, whereby overgenerations of gas will first cause said movable tank-section to rise to its limit and will then cause the overflow or escape of the sealing liquid through said overflow tubes or passages, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the tank-section a, provided with the overflow-passages a at its upper end, of the overflow-pipes a leading from said passages a and terminating in the converging nozzle-sections a the movable ,tank-seetion a and the flexible connections a secured at their upper ends to said tanksection a and at their lowerends tosaid tanksection a, substantially as described.
