Description

'UNITED STATES'v PATENT OFFICE..
ARON M. CARLSON, OF PIERRE, SOUTH DAKOTA.
SLED-RUNNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,872, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed May 8,1897. Serial No. 635,654. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that LARON M. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pierre, in the county of I-Iughes and State of. South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sled-Runners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to detachable sleighrunners for vehicle-wheels; and the object is to provide a simple, convenient, and effective runner for temporary attachment to a vehiclewheel.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vehicle, showing my improved sleigh-runners xed in place. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of one of the runners. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the runner detached from the Wheel. Fig. 4 is a rear end View of the same. Fig. 5 is a transverse section.
1 represents the base-plate, upon which the Wheel rests.
2 2- represent longitudinal vertical guideflanges xed to the base-plate and formed with forwardly and upwardly projecting ends 3 3, which form a continuation of the beveled forward end of the base-plate.
5 represents the runner iron or shoe extending from the forward projecting ends 3 3 down around the bottom of the base-plate.
6 represents the transverse chock block or cleat extending across the rear end of the base-plate and between it and the contiguous ends of the guide-anges 2 2.
7 represents a rearwardly-inclined groove extending between the parallel walls of the guide-flanges, and it is formed by cutting away a portion of the cleat 6 and the contiguous upper face of the base-plate to form an easy passage for the wheelup over the cleat and into the base-plate between the flanges 2 2.
8 represents a longitudinal brace fixed between the forward endsA of the flanges 2 2 by the transverse bolts 9 9, and the rear side of this brace is provided with a curved seat 8', in which the lower forward portion of the wheel snugly rests.
10 represents a link extending through an inclined orifice 11 in the forward-end of the brace 8, so as to encompass the bolt 9, and its projecting eye 12 engages the hook 13 on the rear end of the chain 13', secured to the outer end of the auxiliary doubletree 14, f ulcru med on a bolt 15, extending through the tongue 1G on a fixed bevel-faced block 17, secured to the under side of the tongue and at such an angle that the draft will be alined with the runner.
18 represents the usual doubletree, fulcrumed on the bolt 19 on top of the tongue.
The runners engaging the rear wheels are similar in construction to those employed on the front wheels, and their chains are connected to any suitable point on the afterreach.
2O represents a detachable wedge-shaped block, which is inserted between the rear ends of the parallel arms after the runner is in place on the wheel, and said block is secured in place by a transverse pin 21, passing through the flanges 2, so as to act as a rear check and assist in holding the wheel in place.
This runner will be found convenient and effectual in the northwestern country where the snow drifts, so as to leave long stretches of bare road intervening stretches covered with snow, and in such instances the runners can be attached or removed in a few moments from a loaded team just as effectually as though the vehicle were light.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
In detachable sleigh-runners for vehicle` wheels, the combination of the base-plate 1, having the longitudinal, parallel guide-flan ges 2 2, the transverse cleat 6 provided with the rearwardly-inclined groove 7, the longitudinal brace S secured between the forward ends of said -(Lnges and provided with the curved Seat 8', the link 10 secured in said brace, the auxiliary doubletree 14: .fulcrurned on the bevel-face block 17 fixed to the under side of the tongue, the chain 13' connecting` said link and doubletree, :L chock-block 2O oeeupying the groove 7, and a transverse pin 21 passing through the longitudinal flanges and holding the blo'ok secured, substantially as described. 1o
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
