IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR DIFFUSING THE VAPORS 0F MEDICAL 0R AROMATIC SUBSTANCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,576, dated November 13, 1866; antedatcd May 13, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ANTHONY L. FLEURY, of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Medical Perfuming Apparatus and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. f/
My invention consists in a perfuming apparatus so constructed as to diffuse in a most efficient manner the vapors of medical or aromatic substances mixed with steam, so as to obtain in a room an artificial atmosphere properly medicated for the treatment of pulmonary and other diseases, or perfumed for sanitary and agreeable purposes.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
My apparatus consists of a self-movable retort, A, made of copper or other metals which can withstand heat. The shape and size of this retort can be varied to suit the purpose intended. It can be made quite ornamental and to accord with the general design of the apparatus.
The bottom of the retort A is provided with a small piece, B, shaped as a rest and soldered to the retort A. The cavity of that rest B receives the point of a stationary pin, C, fast on the bar D. Thus the whole of the weight of the retort A rests on the point of the pin (l.
The top of the retort A is closed by a lid, E, which is screwed rmly down on a gum Washer, so as to make ajoint perfectly steamtight. The lid E has at its top part, exactly in the center, a cavity or hole, F, in which the point of a pin, Gr, is I brought down by the springs H I-I, to which it is fast, so that the retort A is held between the points C and G, and it can rotate freely around its longitudinal vertical axis.
The lid E is provided with two or more pipes, I I, of conical shape, the ends t' 'L' of which are contracted in nozzle shape, and are turned in opposite directions, so that if steam is made.

L is a spirit-lamp of ordinary construction. M N is the frame-work which is to support the retort in its proper position over the lamp L. Instead of the lamp L a gas -burner can be used. In that case the frame -work is so shaped as to fit the gas-burner and to hold the retort A at the proper heightover the said burner.
The frame work, the retort,land the lamp can be made to any fancy shape. It can be made to hang, as in my drawings; it can be made with a stand or leg, as in my model; it can have a socket Where the point X is, so as to fit in candlesticks or chandeliers. In fact, a great variety of styles can be adopted without changing the general idea.
The operation of my apparatus is as follows: The lid E being removed, the retort A is iilled with water (in which are mixed the desired medical or aromatic herbs, roots, gums, seeds, oils, extracts, spirits, or chemical compounds) about to the line S S. The lid E being screwed rmly down, the retort A is placed between the two points C and G, and the spirit -lamp Lis lit, or the apparatus placed over a lighted gas-burner. As soon as the heat is sufficient the water will boil and form steam, which, by escaping through the nozzles c' 1T, will cause the retort A to revolve, and thereby spread in a uniform manner throughout the room the steam and vapors of the substances which were put in the retort A.
Sheet 2 of drawings represents a sec tional elevation of one of the many modifications which may be given to my medicating and perfuming apparatus through its center. This form of the invention consists in providing the lamp shade or gas-light shade supporter with a pivot-pin, C, upon which is placed the apparatus hereinafter described, which will medicate, perfume, disinfect, and purify the air that is partly decomposed by the combustion of the wick or burner, and restore the said air so as to render it healthy and pleasant to breathe.
My medicator has also the advantage to cool the atmosphere of the room in which it is applied by the condensation of the vapors evolved and mixed with the burnt air.
V is a lamp-shade supporter, made of wire or other material in the ordinary way as regardsits mode of fastenin g to:burners or lamps, but to its top part are attached the arms Z Z, and in the center of these arms is fastened in a vertical position the pin 0whieh is made sharp at its upper end.
B is the medicating apparatus referred to above. It is composed of a boiler or retort, having at its lower center a conical depression or pipe, F, of such length that when it is placed on the pin G, as represented in the drawings, its own gravity will hold it erect, balanced on the said point C.
M is the lid or top of the boiler B, s crewed or otherwise fastened to the said boiler, so as to be steam-tight, atl? l?. This lid M may have a false lid or screen, K, made of perforated nietal or wire-gauze, which allows room between the false and real lid to place chemicals therein.
Gr G is a false bottom, made also of perforated metal or wiregauze, to separate the spaces H and Dof the apparatus B, to prevent any chemicals placed into the apparatus from touching the bottom of the apparatus. E E are two or more pipes, open at both ends, placed in the inside of the boiler B, and having their ends Q Q elongated and small, protruding outside of the boiler B, and slightly turn ed in opposite directions 011e from the other, forming an angle with the radius of the circle described by the motion -of their ends Q Q around the center pin O, so that if steam or other vapor is issuing from the said pipes Q Q, it'Will, by reacting on the air, impart to the apparatus B a rotary motion on the pin C aeting` as a center. These pipes may also be elongated so as to diminish the size ofthe center C and facilitate its rotation.
Operation: The apparatus B is filled'with water, which must occupy the space D up to the plate G Gr. In the space H are placed leaves, roots, liowers, seed, or other medical or aromatic substances. In the space M of the stopper D are placed such medical substances or perfuming-gums as require but little heat to evolve their vapors-such, for example, as camphor, &c. The stopper D being screwed fast the apparatus B is placed on the' pin C ofthe lamp-shade supporter V. When the water or other liquid in the apparatus B is converted into vapor it issues from the pipes E at Q Q, causing the apparatus to revolve rapidly on its axis, producing a perfeet sheet of vapors, which, as they pass through the medieating, disinfeeting, or perfuming substances previously placed into H and M, carry t-hese along in most minute division, fit to be inhaled with impunity when used for relief or eure of asthma or other disorders of the throat and lungs. It is also admirably adapted for the cure of membra-nous croup. It can also be applied for ventilatin g and purifying crowded halls and rooms, as the steam while condensing absorbs the noxious exhalations and carbonio-acid gas, and attracts, by forming a vacuum, a new quantity of fresh air.
l do not broadly claim the idea of medicating, perfuming, disinfecting, or cooling rooms by the evaporation of water or other liquids with chemicals; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
1. The self-revolving retort A, lid E, pipes II, and strainer K, when used in combination with the pin C and pin G, and the lamp L, or the flame of a gas-burner, for the purposes specified. l
2. The apparatus B or its equivalent, when arranged and operating in the manner and for the purposes above specified.
3. The combination of the lamp-shade supporter or gas-light-shade supporter V V, having the pin C, with the apparatus B, the thimble F, pipes E, stopper D, the whole arranged and operating as set forth.
