J. TIMMS. CENTER PLATE FOR CARS.
No. 595,681. Patented Dec. 14,1897.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES TIMMS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUCKEYE MALLE- ABLE IRON AND COUPLER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CENTER-PLATE FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,681, dated December 14, 1897.
T0 on whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES TIMMS, of Colum-' bus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Center-Plates for Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in-the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in center-plates for cars, the object being to provide a strong plate, one capable of sustaining great weight and heavy strains, to which center or bolster plates are ordinarily subjected.
.With this end in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
A represents my improved center-plate, provided centrally on its bottom face with the usual depending annular seat 1, the end portions of said bottom face beingprovided with a series of strengthening-ribs 2, which latter are preferably located as illustrated in Fig.-
2 of the drawings. The upper or top face of center-plate A is closed, as shown at 3, and has projecting therefrom the side flanges 4.,
which latter are adapted to embrace the side edges of a bolster when in its operative position, whereby lateral movement of said plate is prevented. The casting thus described is practically solid, with the exception of' the hollow chamber formed between annular seat 1 and the closed upper face 3, the form of said chamber being substantially the form of said annular seat 1.
As an additional means for strengthening my improved center-plate a series of posts or ribs 5 are located in the hollow chamber above referred to. These ribs or posts are integral with and connect the closed upper face 3 and annular seat 1, thus affording additional strength at this point. However, if desired, ribs or posts 5 may be dispensed with, as the closed upper face 3 will practically preven crushing atthis part of the plate.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a strong and durable center-plate is secured, and by reason of its closed upper face is adapted to support great weight and withstand un usual and very severe usage, to which these plates are occasionally subjected.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. A center-plate for cars comprising a flat internal posts, the plate provided with a central hole for the king-bolt, and the hollow annular seat opening into the said kin g-bolt hole.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES TIMMS.
