SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,506, dated December 14, 1897.

To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, EDGAR G. WILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Plugs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in fireplugs or hydrants; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my hydrant. Fig. 2 is a side view of the upper part thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail section of the plug-valve seat. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of said seat, and Fig. 5 is anenlarged section of the lower end of the plug. Fig. 6 is an enlarged section on line 6 6 of Fig. l.
The plug is shown as consisting of the casing A and the stand-pipe B, the latter fitting within the casing and clamping the plug-valve seat 0 in place. In connecting the stand-pipe and casing to secure this clamping of the valve-seat O, I provide the casing internally near its upper end with seats for the bolts D, which connect the stand-pipe and casing, and provide for these bolts openings in the standpipe in line with the interior of the casing, as best shown in Fig. 1, in order to secure the clamping together of the casing and standpipe without any lateral projections to afford a surface against which the earth may press as it swells in such manner as to lift the plug. I also seek to form the plug in such shape as to avoid any lifting thereof by the upswelling of the ground by tapering the casing A inward slightly from a point slightly below its middle to its upper end, such taper being in practice very slight and hardly perceptible to the eye.
In the specific construction shown of the connection between the casing and stand-pipe 1. form the casing near its upper end with the internal upper and lower flanges E and F, spaced apart and affording between them a seat for the heads 01 of the bolts D. The flange E is provided at intervals with slots 6, which permit the passage of the heads at of the bolts, which when inserted may be slipped beneath the flange E by a partial turning of Serial No. 633,950; (No model.)

The stand-pipe B is provided on its outer side with a ring-like projection G, which has formed through it the openings 9 for the bolts D, thus forming a strong connection for such bolts D in such manner as to avoid any lateral projection beyond the side of the casing A.
The valve H, being the plug-valve, is fitted to the seat 0 and is preferably double-faced, having its packing formed with the two faces h It, so it may be reversed when worn or when one face for any other reason is defective.
The casing A is provided with the wasteoutlet, and a suitable vent-outlet is provided leading from the stand-pipe into the casing. This vent-outlet is shown as formed through the valve-seat 0, controlled by a valve I, operating on a seat J, which controls the openings j, which lead from the interior of the stand-pipe and are formed in a tubular extension J, which surrounds and projects upwardly from the seat J for the valve I. This valve I is weighted at I and is provided at I with a portion which projects into position for engagement by the valve H when such valve is closed, so the closing of the valve H will open the valve I to permit water within the stand pipe to pass out through the opening j and valve-seat J into the casing and thence out the opening j, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 5.
As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the vent outlet is formed integral with the valve-seat O, and in order to receive the tubular eXten- 9o sion J and the valve I, I provide the standpipe B with a lateral pocket B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, such pocket furnishing on the stand-pipe an offset corresponding to the off set formed at O on the valve-seat C, which 5 results from the provision of parts J J, as best shown in Fig. 4:. This arrangement of the vent-outlet is certain in its operation, permits the draining of the stand-pipe down to a point but a short distance above the plug-valve, I00 and furnishes both the plug-valve seat and the vent-outlet-valve seat in the same part,
facilitating both the manufacture and applibolt-heads, the stand-pipe having on its outer lo cation thereof, as will be understood from the side a ring-like projection provided with openin gs for the bolts, and the bolts passed through drawings.
