Description

` B. B. SANKEY.
BENCHi No. 595,252. Patented Dec. 7, 1897;
Inl/*ela 011' UNiTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EBEN B. SANKEY, OF SALEM, MISSOURI.
WRENCH.
SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,252, dated December '7, 189'?. Application tiled March 29, 1897. Serial No. 629,790. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EBEN B. SANKEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salem, Dent county, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of wrenches wherein the shank of each jaw is provided with notches or serrations and one of the shanks provided with means to tighten it upon the other shank when the wrench has been adjusted to suit the size of the nut to be turned.
Figure I is a side view of my improved wrench. Fig. Il is an enlarged detail edge view. Fig. III is an enlarged detail side view illustrating the manner of locking the two shanks together when the jaws have been adjusted.
Referring to the drawings, l represents one of the jaws, and 2 the other jaw, of the wrench. The jaw l has a shank 3 and the jaw 2 a shank 4:, the two shanks forming the handle of the wrench. Secured to or formed upon the shank 4e are straps 5, between which the shank 3 iits and moves as the wrench is adj usted.
rlhe shank 3 is provided with a long series of notches or serrations 6 and the shank 4L with a short series of notches or serrations 7, the notches being adapted to engage, as shown in Figs. I and III, to hold the jaws from moving apart when the nut is being turned. The notches 7 are made just back of the strap 5, so that while the lock or tight ening device exerts its force on the shank f-i close to the notches 7, yet these notches are exposed and not interfered with by the straps 5, so that they can be readily cleaned and can be sharpened if they become bruised or dull.
8 represents a locking-block pivoted to the straps 5 by means of a pin 9, that passes through the outer ends of the straps and through a diagonal slot l0 in the block S. The inner end of the block S is circular, as shown at ll, while the outer end is provided with a head 12, by which the block is manipulated. The slot lO extends in an outward direction away from the rounded end of the block, as shown in Fig. III.
Vhen the wrench is to be adjusted, the block S is pulled forward from the position shown in full lines, Fig. III, to the position shown in dott-ed lines, and is then swung over from the position shown in full lines, Fig. I, to the position shown in dotted lines, same figure, thus permitting the notches (3 and 7 to be disengaged and the jaws of the wrench adj usted. NVhen the wrench has been adjusted, the block S is turned back to the position shown in full lines, Fig. I, and is then forced toward the position shown in full lines, Fig. III, andthe pin 9, working in thediagonal slot l0, causes the block to act as a wedge in drawing the notches 7 into engagement with the notches 6 and thu's firmly hold ing the wrench to its adjustment. This manner of connecting the block to the straps by a diagonal slot to receive the pin compensates for wear in the parts, for as the parts become worn the locking-block is shoved farther in to compensate for the wear.
The wrench is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and can be quickly adjusted and held to its adjustment. It is not always necessary to manipulate the locking-block for light work; but the wrench may be held with the notches in engagement by pressing the shanks together with the hand that grasps the tool, and at such times the locking-block is not in the way, but is simplyleft lying in the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. I.
I claim as my invention- In a wrench the combination of a jaw having-a shank 3 with a long series of serrations and a jaw having a shank a with a short series of serrations, straps 5, extending from the shank e, a lockingblock journaled to the straps 5 by means of a pin fitting in a diag0- nal slot made in the block, substantially and for the purpose set forth.
