CAR-VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,127, dated December '7, 1897.
Application filed February 9, 1897. Serial No. 622,619. (No model.)
To 64% whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. MOARTHUR, of Gainesrille, in the county of Alachua and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car Ventilators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates particularly to ventilators for refrigerator-cars, and the object is to provide a simple and strong ventilator so arranged that it may be elevated in sections in either direction with relation to the hatchway and that may be swung wholly away from the hatehway.
I will describe a car-ventilator embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a plan View of a portion of the roof of a car and showing a ventilator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section showing the ventilator in one position, and Fig. 3 is a section showing the ventilator in another position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the roof of a car, having a hatchway 2 communicating with the interior of the car and having its walls extending above the roof. Hinged to one side of the hatchway 2 is a frame 3, to which is attached a screen 4.. The hinge connection is shown at 4.
Removably mounted on the frame 3 is a cover consisting of two sections 5 and 6, hinged at their inner edges to a partingstrip 7. These sections 5 and 6 have downwardlyextended side pieces and downwardly-extended end pieces which engage against the outer sides of the frame 3. Hinged to one of the cover-sections is a bar 8, having a hook 9 at its free end adapted to engage with a hook 10 on the other section.
It is desired that the frame 3 may be con nected to the cover-sections so as to be moved therewith, as indicated in Fig. 8. The means of connection, as here shown, consists of stapies 11, extended through openings in the cover-sections and designed to be engaged by pins 12, having chain connection with the cover-sections.
In operation when it is desired to elevate one section of the cover it is drawn upward, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the hook 9 engaged with the hook 10. Of course when the parts are in this position the frame 3 and its screen 4 will remain in the hatchway. Should it be desired to raise the entire cover and the screen so that ice maybe passed through the hatchway, the screen-frame will be secured to the cover-sections by means of the pins 12, and then the cover and screen maybe swung upward and the end of the rod 8 engaged with astop-piece 13 011 the roof of the car, as shown in Fig. 3.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the section 5 as elevated and the section 6 as closed, but it is obvious that this order may be reversed, depending upon the direetion in which the car is moving. It is obvious that when the section 5 is closed the section 6 may be held open by the bar 8.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A car-ventilator, comprising a hatchway, a frame having hinge connection at one side of the hatchway, a screen secured to said frame, a cover consisting of two sections hinged to swing one section relatively to the other, and means for holding either one of said sections in an open position, substantially as specified.
2. A ear-ventilator, comprising a hatchway having its walls extended above the roof of the car, a frame hinged to said hatchway, a screen carried by the frame, a cover consisting of two sections hinged to swing one relatively to the other, means for removably securing said sections to the frame, and a rod having a hinge connection with one section of the cover, and having a hook at its free end to engage with a hook on the other section of the cover, substantially as specified.
3. A car-ventilator, comprising a hatchway having its walls extended above the roof of the car, a frame having a hinge connection With a wall of said hatohway, a cover consistone of the cover-sections, and means for ening of two sections hinged toswing, one relagaging" the free end of said rod with the other tively to the other, staples on the frame desection of the cover,substantial1y as specified. 1o signed to extend through openings in the ANDREW J. MOARTHUR. cover-sections, pins for engagin g through said \Vitnesses:
staples to secure the cover-sections to the J. A. AMMONS,
frame, arod having swinging connection With WV. W. HAMPTON.
