FIG. 2,
WITNESSES Z0; M 6 7M L Fm I F UNITED STATES PATENT O FI E.
MIOHAELH'YNES, ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT.
TWYER FOR FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,878, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed January 27, 1897. Serial No. 620,987. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL HYNEs, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Twyer for Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in twyers in that kind of furnaces where a forced blast is maintained for some time; and the object of my improvement is to provide a twyer which is curved in such a way as to create rotary currents of air in the furnace and adapted to be turned so as to vary the direction of such currents.
I attain the object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
Figure 1 is avertical section showing twyers set to force currents of air upward. Fig. 2 is a plan showing arrangement of twyers to produce rotary currents in the furnace.
The two figures are lettered alike in like parts.
The outer case D, with fire-brick lining E, represents the furnace and is of the class commonly used for the melting of iron and other refractory metals.
Bis the adjustable nozzle or twyer at which the blast enters the furnace from pipe A, which is directly connected to a fan.
The adjustable portion of the twyer is curved at its inner end, so as to give the issuing currents of air a rotary motion, as indicated by the arrows. The straight portion of the twyerwhere it goes through the furnace-casin g is of the ordinary pipe or round form, so that it shall turn freely in the casing. Its outer end has a sleeve connection to the pipe A, so that the adjustable portion of the twyer may be rotated freely at any time.
The twyer B can be so adjusted as to equalize the blast in all parts of the fuel contained in the furnace, thereby bringing down very hot metal with a minimum expenditure of fuel.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with a furnace and windpipe, at twyer supplied by said pipe and mounted permanently in the wall of the furnace, the said twyer having a curved discharging part which is movable to all pointsof a circle for varying at will the direction of th blast substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a furnace and a source of air-supply, a twyer discharging the air into the said furnace, the said twyer being provided with a curved discharging part which is adapted to turn independently on the remainder of the said twyer substantially as set forth.
MICHAEL HYNES. Witnesses: A. 0. Burns, M. J. LAOHANOE.
