DEVICE FOR DE'IF'ACHING HARNESS.
SIEECIFICA'LIONl forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,859, dated December 7, 1897.
Application led March 16,1897. Serial No. 627,843. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL B. CLARK- SON, of lClinton, in the county of Laurens and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Debinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improvement. Fig. 2 shows the parts detached and separated, and Figs. 3 and 4 aresectional views.
The connection is composed of two sections A and B, detachably connected together, one section, A, being connected with the saddle or belly-band of theI harness and the other with the tug or vehicle.
A indicates the section of the coupling or connection which is attached to the saddle, belly-band, or some part of the harness. This section A is provided with four loops l, 2, 3, and 4, by which its secure attachment to the harness is effected. The upperv loop 1 preferably has a buckle 5 connected with it, by which the connection is buckled to the saddle-strap 6. The opposite loop 3 carries the belly-band 7 Loop 2 affords a means for the attachment of the collar-strap 8 and loop 4 opposite for the breeching. Thus it will be seen that this section A forms a connection between these several parts or straps of the harness, it being curved slightly to conform to the shape of the draft-animals body, it being adapted to rest thereagainst. This sec tion A is provided with a vertically-disposed rib 15, T-shaped in horizontal cross-section. At the upper end an outwardlyprojecting the rib 15 of section A and 'a recess 16 to re-A ceive lug 10. A spring-actuated slide-pin 17 in the upper end of this section B is adapted to slide across the notch or recess 16. To couple or connect these sections, the pin 17 is drawn rearwardly and section A is slid upward as far as it will go with the T-shaped rib 15 in the groove 20. Then the pin is released and the pin springs forward through the hole 11. To release the parts, the pinis simply drawn back and the weight of the thills will disconnect the parts, or the weight of the bellyband, if in a double harness, will accomplish the same thing. In this way the time consumed in harnessing or unharnessing is triiiing. It will be understood,of course, that the connection can be used with single or double harness, heavy or light, plow-gear, and whatnot; also, it may be stated that by merely reversing the part-s a little the slidepincould be brought inside or next to the horse.
It is evident that other slight changesmight be made in theform and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention,
and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
` l. An attaching and detaching device consisting of two sections, one having a AT-shaped rib and outwardlyprojecting perforated lug, and the other having a groove and a recess to receive the rib and lug, and a slide-pin which locks these parts together.
2. The combination with a section constructed and adapted to be attached to a harness, said section provided with a verticallydisposed T-rib, and an outwardly-projecting perforated lug, of a section connected with In` testimony whereof I have signed this the tugs or traces, and provided with t groove specification iii the presence of two subscribto receive the rib and a recess to receive the ing Witnesses.
lug, and a spring-actuated pin adapted to NATHANIEL B. CLARKSON.
5 have sliding connection with one section and Witnesses:'
enter the hole in the lug whereby to lock the A. B. BLAKELY, sections detachcbiy together.
