Description

(No Model.)
J. A. HAYS.
, FOLDING BOX.
No. 594,690. Patented Nov. 30, 1,897.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
' JOHN A. HAYS, or PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,690, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed January 21, 1897. Serial No- 6Z0,137- (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. HAYS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Crates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding crates, and has for its object to construct a crate of the above description that may be advantageously employed for shipping eggs, fruit, or may be employed for shipping poultry and the like.
The invention further aims to construct a form, and thus save considerably in the freight in returning the empty crates.
I A still further object is to construct a crate that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, effectual in its operation, and comparativelyinexpensive to manufacture.
-With the above and other objects in View the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved folding box with the lid open. Fig.- 2 is a view of the box when in the folded position. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a portion of one of the sides and a portion of the partition, showing manner in which the partition is secured in position.
Referring now to the drawings by referenceletters, a indicates the rear side piece, I) the front side, and d and e the respective ends, said side and end pieces being secured together by hinges ff, said hinges at'two of the corners being on the outside of the end and side pieces, and at the opposite corners the said hinges being placed in the same relative positions, on the inner face of the side and end pieces. A bottom g is secured by hinges h h to the front side 19, said bottom having secured thereto by hinges 70 7c the partition Z, which is provided on its upper face with keepers m m, in which is journaled a rod n, provided on its one end with a knob 0,while the opposite end is adapted to engage in the rear side piece a and lock the box in the built-up form. Hinged to the back at is a top or lid 19, carrying a hasp q, adapted to engage a staple r in the front b.
The manner in which the box is folded is as follows: The rod n is released from its engagement with the rear side piece a, which will permit the partition to fold onto the bot-- tom g, and also permit the said bottom g to swing on its hinges, bringing the same out of the way of the end and side pieces, which will then fold endwise in either direction by rea-. son of the arrangement of the hinges ff. For convenience in handing I have provided strips 8 s on the ends, which serve as grips, and se cured on the base 9 is a stop t, against which the end abuts and serves to strengthen the box.
It will be noticed that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my. construction.
Having fully described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
In a folding box, the combination of the 'side and end pieces hinged together in such a manner as to swing endwise in folding, a bottom hinged to the front, a lid hinged to the back, a partition hinged to the bottom and provided with 'a cut-away portion and a semicircular slot in a plane above the same, a locking-rod carried by said slot and secured to the same by staples and provided with a JOHN A. HAYS.
