WAGON-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,621, dated November 30, 1897.
Application iled April 21, 189 '7. Serial No. 633,205. (No model.)l I
HARTSELL, a citizen of the United States, rel siding at Rowland, in the county of Lime- .stone and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Beds; and I do hereby declarel thel following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wagons and similar vehicles; and the object in view is to provide extension-sides for a wagon-body and to mount these sides in such a manner that they will interlock with each other, requiring the sides to be removed in acertai-n order in order that they may 'successively release each other.
The detailed objects and advantages of the invention will be pointed out in the course of the subjoineddescription.I
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction hereinafter speciiically set forth, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a wagon-body constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the saine. Fig. 3 is a rear end view. Fig. 4 is a front end View. Fig. 5 is a detail section through one corner of the wagon-body in line with the extensionsides. Fig. Gis asimilar section taken at the junction of the sides and ends of the main body of the wagon. Fig. '7 is a detail perspective view of yone of the socket-pieces or keepers. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view showing the brake-lever and its engaging rack. Fig. 9 isa detail vertical section showing the manner of locking the front and rear extension-boards.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bottom of an ordinary wagon boX or body provided with stationary sides 2. These sides are connected to the bottom by means of bolts 3, which pass through the bottom, the upper ends being flattened and provided with countersunk openings to receive screws or other suitable fasteners 4, which enter or pass curing-bolts 3 may be employed. The upper portions of the rear bolts 3 are rabbeted,-as.
indicated at 8, in their front edges to receive L-shaped plates 9, secured -to the rear side of the tail-gate 10. In front of the tail-gate are arranged fian ged keeper-plates 11, with which other plates 9 on the front of the tail-gate engage when the tail-gate is slid downward vertically between v the sides 2. The 'front board 12 is secured in place in a similar manner and may be readily removed whenever desirable.
The extension-sides are indicated at 13 and may be of any suitable height. Each of said sides is provided upon its outer surface with a series of oblique standards 14, secured theretoby screws or other fasteners 15, arranged at intervals. The lower ends ot' the standards extend below the bottom edge of the side 13 and are adapted to enter keepers or socket-pieces 16, also arranged at an oblique angle and extending at right angles to the inclination of the standards 14. vIn order to place the extension-sides 13 upon the body of the vehicle, the lower ends of the -standards 14 must be entered in vthe socketpieces 16 and the boards must 'then be slid downward at an angle corresponding 'to the inclination or Obliquity of' the standards 14.
Upon their inner sides and adjacent to the front and tail boards the extension-sides 13 are provided with spaced cleats or4 keeperplates 17 for engagement with L-shaped plates 18 at the en ds of the front and rear extensionboards 19 and 20, respectively. The front extension-board 20 has secured to its outer surface a vertical standard 21, which is extended downward sufficiently to pass through an opening 22 in the bottom 1 and also through the front cross-bar 6, said standard being provided at a point below the bar 6 with a transverse opening 23 to receive a cotter lor split pin, which will prevent the upward movement IOO of said standard and hold the extension-board 2O in place. A similar standard 24 is provided for holding the tail extension-board in place. The tail-board 19 is provided at its rear with a hook 25, adapted to receive a pivoted loop 26, mounted on the end rung 27 of a ladder 28, the side bars 29 of which are pivotally connected to the rear end of the wagon-body, as indicated at 30, so that said ladder may be folded upward or downward, according as the same is required. The engagement between the hook 25 and loop 2G also serves to prevent the displacement of the tail extensionboard 20.
In order to remove the extension-sides 13, the front and rear extension-boards 19 and 20 must first be slid vertically out of place, for the reason that when said boards are in place the sides 13 cannot be removed, as it is necessary to slide said sides upward in an obli que line, which movement is defeated by the front and rear boards when in place, said front and rear boards thus serving to lock the sides. In placing the extension-boards upon the body of the wagon the sides 13 must iirst be placed in position and the end pieces subsequently inserted.
31 designates a rock-shaft mounted transversely under the bottom of the wagon-body and in suitable bearing-sleeves 32, secured thereto. This rock shaft constitutes the brake-beam and is provided with bent ends 33, to which suitable brake-shoes 34 are secured and arranged to contact with the wheels. At one side of the wagon-body the shaft 31 is provided with a crank-arm 35, from which a brake-rod 36 extends forward and connects pivotally to the lower end of a brake-lever 37, pivotally mounted intermediate its ends at 3S in a suitable hanger 39, attached to one of the stationary side-boards 2 of the body.
40 designates a toothed rack which is secured to the side 2 near its upper edge, said rack being constructed from a strip or bar of metal bent into U shape, as shown, and having its end portions secured to the wagonbody. The central or outlying portion of the rack is ineised, as shown at 41, and the upper edge bent inward to form a horizontally-disposed fiange 42, which is notched or toothed, as indicated at 43. The lever 37 is provided upon its outer surface with a longitudinallyextending rib 44, which is adapted to engage between the teeth or in the notches of the rack when adjusted and be thereby held at any desired adjustment. The lever 37 is mounted loosely on its fulcrum, so that it may be rocked laterally into and out of engagement with the rack. This brake mechanism is extremely simple in construction, reliable in operation, and will not interfere with the detachability of the extension-sides of the wagon.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the body of a wagon or similar vehicle, of extension-sides made removable in an oblique line, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the body of a wagon or other vehicle,oi extension-sides having obliquely-disposed standards, and socketpieces secured to the said body and adapted to receive said standards, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the body of a wagon or other vehicle, of an extension-side, a series of oblique standards secured rigidly to said extension-side and having their lower ends extended below the bottom edge of the extension-side, and keepers or socket-pieces secured to said body and adapted to receive the lower ends of the standards, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the body of a wagon or other vehicle, of extension-sides provided with oblique standards adapted to be received in socket-pieces on the body whereby the extension-sides are caused to move in oblique planes, and removable end-boards slidingly fitted between the extension-sides and movable in vertical lines, substantially as described.
5. The combination with the body of a wagon or other vehicle, of extension-sides provided with oblique standards adapted to enter socket-pieces on the body whereby the sides are made movable in oblique lines, and extension end-boards slidingly mounted in ways between the extension-sides and movable in a different direction from the direction in which the sides move, substantially as described.
6. The combination with the body of a wagon or other vehicle, of extension-sides mounted thereon, extension front and rear boards slidingly engaging the sides and serving to lock the same against displacement, and standards secured to the end-boards and removably fitted in openings in the bottom of the body, said standards having provision beneath the bottom of the body for preventing their displacement, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD EVERETTE HARTSELL.
