P ETTER oARLssoN KJELLBERG., or" STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.
IVIACHIN FOR PACKING MATCHES I'N- BOXES, 800.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,944, dated November 16, 1897.
Application iled February 26, 1895. Serial No. 539,814.
To all whom. it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, PETTER CARLssoN- KJELLBERG., a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Machines for Packing Matches in Boxes, Paper Cases, or the Like, (for which I have obtained a patent in Sweden, No. 5,434, bearing date May 12, 1894,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in such machines for packing matches in boxes, paper cases, or the like of the kind wherein the matches are brought down in a horizontal position in a number of compartments arranged side by side in order to be measured off in determinate quantities for packing by means of slides which are pushed in between the matches in the said compartment and the store of matches above them. Q
Figure l on the annexed drawings representsthe machine in side elevation and section on the lines ax in Fig. 2 and bx in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 represents the machine from the end in section on the lines cX in Fig. l and dx in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 represents the machine in plan section on the lines eX cx in Figs. l and 2. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show the essential parts of the machine'on a larger scale. In Fig. 4 the part of the machine is shown from the side in section on the lines f5 in Fig. 5 and g in Fig. 6. Fig. 5 is an end view of said part in section on the lines hX hX in Figs. 4 and. Fig. 6 is a' plan section on the lines L'X X in Figs. 4 and 5.
a is the magazine in which the store of matches is placed; b, the matches; c, the partition-walls between the compartments d, in which compartments the matches to b e measured off are brought down.
e are the slides, which are movable in the longitudinal direction of the matches and by means of which the measuring off of the matches is effected. -1
(No InodelJ' Patented in Sweden May 12,1894,N0.5,434.
Walls of the magazine a and in the sides of the partition-walls c. The slides e have narrowed end extensions disposed and movable longitudinally of the matches. Two slides e are placed in each compartment d, and the side edges of the slides c move in the grooves f when the slides pass to and fro among the matches, thus preventing the aforesaid points from striking against the ends of the matches in the compartments d, which matches othery happen to come in the way of the slides c.
when they are pushed in among the matches, thereby preventing said matches from being split or otherwise damaged by said slides. To effect the pushing away of the matches in question, said implements g are during thc measuring off of the matches moved quicklyl up and down, which movement may of course be accomplished in many different ways. For instance, a horizontal bar h, provided with teeth on the upper side, is moved forward and backward across the compartments beneath'the part of the implements g which is outside the compartments d. These implements are quickly lifted by the elevated parts of the bar h, acting on the tooth g3 on the frame g', which frame oscillates around the journal .g2 and carries all the implements g, and when moved upward is immediately af- -terward pressed down in the hollows between the teeth of the bar h by the spring g4. Said movement to and fro of the bar h is derived from a cam-groove h4 in a drum on the main shaft Zby means of the rods h', h2, and-h3, the toothed bar 71. being attached to the rod 7L. 'L' are the pistons which push the matches that are separated in the compartments d out from the said compartments. These pistons t' are attached to the cross-piece t', that is connected with the lever i3 bymeans of the link-2. The lever t3 is pivoted at 5. The movement of the pistons t' is derived from a cam-groove 'i4 in the disk c5, in which the lever 3 engages.
lo are the vertical sliding doors that leave passage for the matches that have been measured oft and are to be pushed out from the IOO compartments d for the packing in the boxes. These doors are Worked as follows: At the end of the forward movement of the lever e3 the inclined surface 7c3 on a prolongation of said lever e3 acts upward on the pin 7a4 of the bar 7a2 and the bar k2 is raised. Said bar k2 carries pins 7c', that are affixed to doors k and pass through slots h5 in the outer wall of the magazine a, and the doors 7c are lifted at the same time as the bar 7a2. The doors are moved downward or shut, when the lever e3 is returning, by means of the inclined surface k,
Vwhich acts upon the pin 7a4 just as the surface k3, but in the opposite direction.
The implements g in the arrangement shown are placed horizontally; but they may obviously occupy a vertical position.
I claim as my inventionl. In machines for packing matches in boxes, paper cases and the like, the combination of a reservoir for the matches and coinpartments d adapted to hold the matches horizontally, with slides e provided with narrowed end extensions lying longitudinally in, and movable in the longitudinal direction of, the matches in said compartments, and means for moving said slides, substantially as and for the purposelset forth.
2. In machines for packing matches in boxes, paper cases or the like, the combination of the compartments d provided with grooves f, with the slides e provided with a pointed side edge, and the vibrating implements g, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PE'ITER CARLSSON KJELLBERG.
