SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,844, dated November 16, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. HAEGE- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing 7 along the line of the stalls of a stable.
at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Releasin g Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being. had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for simultaneously releasing all the horses or other animals confined in a stable or the like, in theevent of fire or other similar emergency.
The invention has for its object the production of a simple and inexpensive means whereby horses or other animals may be independently hitched and unhitched in their respective stalls, and which means can at the same time be'operated from one point, so as to simultaneously release all of said animals and cause them to immediately leave said stalls in the event of fire or other similar emergency.
To these ends the invention comprises a supporting-framework, to which are secured aseries of brackets or the like, adapted to support a water-pipe which is designed to extend On this pipe are pivotally mounted a series of cocks having hook-like extensions adapted to engage rings in the halter-straps of the animals confined in said stalls, said hook-like extensions being held in normal engagement with said rings by means of suitable springs secured to the supporting-framework and bearing against extensions of said cocks. Holes or perforations are formed in the waterpipe and are-normally covered by the cocks, which latter, however, are provided with slotted portions designed to register with said holes or perforations, whereby a stream of water will be ejected. The cocks are all moved back simultaneously by means of a revoluble shaft connected to said cocks by means of cords or chains or may be separately operated by hand.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set larged detail sectional view. Fig. 6 is a detail.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a supporting-framework which is designed to extend through the forward ends of a series of stalls and is secured to the end walls thereof in any preferred manner. To this framework are secured a series of brackets a, one for each stall, each of which is provided with two forwardly-extended'ears a, provided with coincident holes or openingsa ,'thro 1gh which is passed a water-pipe a which is normally kept filled with water under pressure and from any suitable source. (Not shown.) Between the ears a of each-bracket are secured cocks B, each of which consists of a cylindrical body portion 1), fitting around pipe a and adapted to turn thereon, and having an upwardly-extended arm I) and a forwardlyextended hook portion 12 which is adapted to fit a hole or opening Z9 formed in a web I), connecting the forward ends of cars a. The hook portions 17 are normally held in engagement with said holes 19 by means of platesprings O, secured at one end to arms 5, their other ends being secured to framework A. In each cock B, on the under side thereof, is formed a slot I), which is adapted to register with a series of holes or perforations b formed in pipe a whereby water will be ejected when said cock is operated or opened. The webs are designed to form seats or rest for rings 19 which are provided with concaved portions adapted to fit the body portions 6 of each cock, and shoulders 12 which are designed to fit under overhanging shoulders b of ears a, the hook portions b of said cocks being designed to be passed through theholes or openings in said rings. The halter-straps are each held snugly in place by spring-washers \V.
D designates a shaft rotatably mounted in bearings d,secured to framework A and adapted to be rotated by any suitable means, preferably a hand-wheel d, as shown. The shaft D is connected to each cock B by means of cords or chains (1 which are secured to eyes (1 on the inner faces of extensions 1) of said cocks, the other ends of said cords or chains being connected to similar eyes 61 secured to the periphery of said shaft. From this it will be seen that all of the hook portions of said cocks may be raised by the rotation of shaft D. To prevent the return of said hook portions to their normal positions under the action of springs O, I key a ratchet-wheel d to shaft A, said wheel being normally engaged by a spring-pressed pawl d pivoted to f rainework A.
In order to open the stable-door simultaneously with the releasing of the animals confined in the stalls, I connect a rope or cord 6 to the latch e of the door E, the other end of said cord being connected to one arm of a bellcrank lever c. From the free end of lever e I extend a second cord c which is wound at its other end around a drum 6, keyed on shaft D. By this means the rotation of shaft D will cause the unlatching of the stabledoor, and the same will then be readily and quickly opened by means of spring hinges or weights, as shown.
The operations and advantages of my invention are at once apparent from what has been said. It will be observed that each cock is so arranged that its hook may be operated independently of the others, and at the same time the stream of water will not be ejected therefrom unless the said cock is moved back to the utmost limit of its movement. It will also be observed that in the event of fire or like emergency the shaft D can be readily and quickly rotated, so as to release all of the hooks b which will be disengaged and a stream of water will be thrown into the face of each animal as soon as the slots 12 register with the holes or openings Z) in the waterpipe, whereby the animals will be frightened into leaving the stalls. Simultaneously with the releasing of the animals the stable-doors will be opened, affording them ready and easy egress. It will be further observed that myimproved detaching device comprises but few parts and is not liable to readily get out of order or become deranged.
I claim as my invention 1. The herein-described device for releasing animals, comprising a supporting-framework, a series of brackets secured thereto, a water-pipe, spring-pressed cocks pivotally mounted on said pipe between said brackets, controlling the flow of water from the pipe, and means for simultaneously moving all of said cocks against the action of their springs, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described improved device for releasing animals, comprising a supportingframework, a series of brackets secured thereto, a water-pipe, a series of cocks pivotally mounted on said pipe between said brackets controlling the flow of water from the pipe, and having upwardly-extended arms, springs bearing against said arms, and means for simultaneously moving all of said cocks against the action of said springs, as set forth.
3. The herein-described device for releasing animals, comprising a supporting-framcwork, a series of brackets secured to said framework, a pipe supported by said brackets and designed to be normally filled with water under pressure, a series of cocks pivotally mounted on said pipe and having upwardly-extended arms and lower hook-like extensions, springs bearing against the arms of said cocks, and means for simultaneously moving all of said cocks against the action of said springs, substantially as set forth.
4. The herein-described device for releasing animals, comprising a supporting-framework, a series of brackets secured thereto and each having forwardly-extended arms, a pipe supported by said arms and designed to be normally filled with water under pressure, a web connecting said arms and having a hole or opening therein, a series of cocks pivotally mounted on said pipe and having hook-like portions, springs for normally holding said hook portions in the holes or openings of said webs, and means for simultaneously moving all of said cocks against the action of said springs, substantially as set forth.
5. The herein-described device for releasing animals, comprising a supporting-framework, a series of brackets secured thereto and each having forwardly-extended arms, a web connecting said arms and having a hole or opening therein, a pipe supported by said arms and designed to be normally filled with water under pressure, a series of cocks pivotally mounted on said pipe and havinghooklike portions, rings adapted to rest on said webs coincident with the holes or openings thereof, springs adapted to hold said hook portions in engagement with said rings, and means for simultaneously withdrawing all of said hook portions, substantially as set forth.
6. The herein-described device for releasing animals, comprising a supporting-framework, a series of brackets secured thereto and having forward shoulders, webs formed adjacent said shoulders and having holes or openings therein, a pipe supported by said brackets and designed to be normally filled with water under pressure, a series of cocks pivotally mounted on said pipe and having hook-like portions, rings adapted to rest on said webs and having shoulders designed to fit beneath the shoulders of said brackets, springs adapted to hold the hook portions of said cocks in engagement with said rings, and means for simultaneously withdrawing all of said hook portions,substantially as set forth.

pipe supported by said bracket designed to be normally filled with water under pressure, and having a series of holes or perforations therein, cocks pivotally mounted on said pipe and having slots adapted to register with said holes or perforations, said cocks being also provided with hook-like projections and upper arms or extensions, springs secured to said framework and bearing against said arms or extensions, and means for simultaneously moving all of said cocks against the action of said springs, substantially as set forth.

12. The herein-described device for releasing animals, comprising a supporting-framework, a series of brackets secured thereto, a
pipe supported by said brackets and having holes or perforations therein, cocks pivotally mounted on said pipe and having slots adapted to register with said holes or perforations, said cocks being also provided with upper arms or extensions and lower hook-like portions, springs bearing against said arms or extensions, a rotatable shaft mounted on said framework,chains connected to said shaft and to the arms or extensions of said cocks, means for rotating said shaft, and means for holding said cocks against the action of said springs, substantially as set forth.

The herein-described device for releasing animals comprising a supporting-framework, brackets secured thereto, cocks pivotally mounted in said brackets, having upper arms or extensions, springs bearing against said arms or extensions, a rotatable shaft mounted in said framework, connections between said shaft and said cocks, a drum mounted on said shaft, and a cord secured to said drum and designed to be connected to the latch of a stable-door, substantially as set forth. The herein-described device for releasing animals, comprising a framework, brackets secured thereto, a pipe supported by said brackets and having holes or perforations therein, cocks mounted on said pipe and having slots adapted to register with said holes or perforations, said cocks also having lower hook-like extensions, connections between said shaft and said cocks, a drum mounted on said shaft, and a cord secured to said drum and designed to be connected to the latch of a stable-door, substantially as set forth.
