Be it known that I, BENJAMIN JUDD ABBOTT, a citizenfof the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvelnent in Annealing-Furnaces, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates. to improvements in annealing-furnaces. f
The object of my invention is to provide a furnace or apparatus of a simple, durable, and efficient construction by which metal articles may be rapidly and cheaply annealed, whileat the same time a regular and uniform annealing action is imparted to each and everyarticle and a uniform product thus turned out.
My invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a heating-furnace, of an inclined rotating annealing chamber or cylinder through which the articles to be annealed lconveyed back to the annealing chamber or are conveyed or pass in' connection with hot sand, with which the articles to be annealed come in contact 'as they pass through the cylinder-in at one end and out at the other. also consists, in connection with these parts, in an elevator or conveyer for returning the sand over and over again to the rotating annealing chamber or cylinder, in a screen for separating the sand from the annealed articles, and in a supplemental rotating chamber or cylinder for reheating the sand as it is cylinder, so that the sand may be kept of a comparatively uniform temperature while acting upon the articles to be annealed.
My invention, further consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part'of this specification, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of an annealing furnace or apparatus embodying my invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.v Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the screen and discharge-chute for separating the sand from the annealed articles. Fig. 4 is a detail end view showing one of theadjustable bearings for the shaft of the rotating chamber or cylinder.
In the drawings, A represents the fire-box of a furnace, A its heating-chamber, and A2 its smoke flue or stack.
The furnace may be of any suitable kind or construction and designed for burning any suitable kind of fuel. In the drawingsI have illustrated it as being furnished with a grate A3 for burning coal. i
B is an inclined `rotating annealing-chamber, preferably of cylindrical form, extending longitudinally across the 4heating-chamber of the furnace, through which the hot sand C and the articles to be annealed are conveyed or pass, and B/ is the similar rotating cylinder or chamber for reheating the sand as it is returned to the rotating annealing chamber or cylinder B.
The cylinder B is Open at both ends for admission and discharge, of the sand and articles to be annealed, and it is provided with short or stub shafts b, secured thereto'by winged heads or spiders h', which fit inside the cylinder and are bolted or riveted thereto. The elevator or conveyer D may be of any suitable kind or construction,but preferably consists of a chain d, running over pulleys furnished with buckets d2 and inclosed in a case cl3.
F is a screen by which the articles annealed are separated from the sand as the same are delivered together from the annealing-cylinder B, and F a chute for delivering the annealed articles into the car G or other convenient receptacle.
