To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon W. H BER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,-have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Compressing Powdered or Granular Substances, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide for the use of druggists and others a cheap and simple but effective machine for compressing powdered or granular materials into the form of disks or tablets. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is. a .view, partly in section and partly in side elevation, of a machine constructed in accordance with. my invention, showing the parts in position for the reception of the powdered or granular material. Fig. 2 is ,a similar View showing the parts in position for compressing said material. Fig. 3 is a view, partly in plan or top view and partly in section, illustrating the parts of the machine in position for expelling the compressed tablet. Fig. is a sectional view, partly in elevation, of part of the machine, illustrating one of the features of construction of the same; and Figs. 5 and 6 are views, partly in section and partly in elevation, of the feeding device for the machine.
The base or bed plate of the machine is represented at 1, this base having a fiat top which serves for the support of a sliding plunger-head 2 and a sliding mold-head 3, said plunger-head having secured thereto a plunger 4i, and the mold-head having secured to it a tubular mold-block 5, to which fit snugly both the plunger 4 and another plunger 6, which has a stem 7, secured by means of a thumb-screw 8 in a post 9 atone end of the base or bed plate 1.
The sliding plungenhead 2 has a contracted forward end 10 and is forked at the rear end, so asto form opposite wings 11, which carry a transverse pin 12, and upon the latter is mounted an antifrictionmoller 13, which is adapted to a slot in a oan1-lever lat, hung to a transverse pin 15, which is carried by cheekpie ces ltiat the rear end of the base-plate, so that when the said lever 1a is moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig.-2 the plunger-head 2 will be projected, reverse movement of the lever eiiecting a retraction ofsaid plunger-head.
Screwing into athreaded opening in the base-plate is a set-screw 42, which serves as a stop to limit the descent of the operatingarm of the lever 14:, so as to regulate the approach of the plunger 4 toward the plunger 6 to accord with the desired size of the tablet to be produced, and in addition to this adjustable stop there is a fixed stop 43, which prevents such movement of the cam-lever 14 aswould'cause the plunger 4 to come into contact with and injure the plunger 6 when no charge of material was present between them.
The plungenhead 2 is contained between cheek-pieces 17 on the base-plate and is retained in position vertically by means of a transverse roller 18, carried by and free to turn in said cheek-pieces, but the plungerhead fits loosely between the cheek-pieces, the lateral position of said plunger-head being determined by means of set-screws 19, adapted to threaded openings in forward extensions 20 of the cheek-pieces 17, these setscrews being on the opposite sides of the contracted forward portion 10 of the plungerhead, so that accurate lateral adjustment of the plunger 4 in order to bring it into line with the tubular mold 5 can be readily effected.
The mold-head 3 has side arms 21, which flank the post 9, carrying the fixed plunger 6, the outer ends of said arms 21 having a transverse pin 22, which is adapted to a slot 23 in a curved lever 24, the latter being hung to a transverse pin 25, carried by projecting lugs 26 on the base-plate 1.

In the operation of the device the powdered oizgranular charge is deposited in the-tubu lar mold 5 while the parts of the machine "are; in the position shown in Fig. '1that is to say, when the plunger-head 2 is retraetedto its full extentand the mold-head 3-is fuliyi projected. The lever 14 is: then operated-s0 as to project the plunger-head 2,-the mold-1 head retreating before it and the lever-24. rising until the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 2. The powdered or granular: mass is now confined in the mold between the movable plunger'4and the fixed plunger 6 and may be subjected'to any desired de-' gree of compression by movement ofthe re-' spective levers 14 and 24 in the direction of the arrowsshown in said- Fig. 2.
When the desired compression of the tablethas been effected, the plunger-heaclQis retracted by reversing the direction of movement of the lever 14, and there is also a re-i traction of the mold-head 3 until the parts assume the position-shown in Fig- 3, whereuponthe compressed tablet will be projected from :the mold by the action of the 'fixed plunger 6;
When it is desired to change the "character of the mold and plungers, the thumb screw 8. is loosened so as to release the stem 7 of the plunger 6, and the latter is then moved forward in the mold, so that the mold-head can be .swungup-ward, ELS ShO'WIl'lD Fig- 4, whereupon the plunger can be completely withdrawn from the mold, and the mold itself can be then removed upon slackening the thumb screw 40, whereby it is held in position in the head3,removal of the plunger 4 being effected by slackening the thumb-screw 41, which secures the stem of said plunger in the plunger-head 2. It will be observed that the fixed plunger 6 constitutes the guide torthe mold 5 and mold-head 3, while the horizontal guidance of the plunger-head 2 is effected by the baseplate land transverse roller 18, lateral guidan cc of said plunger-head being controlled by the set-screws'li).
