PUMP-CYLINDER PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,027, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed July 13,1896. Serial No. 599,039. (No model.)
To all 2072,0122. it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. NEwooMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Packing for Pump- Oylinders, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same, in which- Figure 1 represents a central vertical sectional view of apump-cylinder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view of the metallic bushing forming a portion of my improved packing. Fig. 4: is a top view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a side and detached view of the upper or removable gland.

2c The object of my invention is to provide the pump-cylinder of a pumping-engine with a centrally-packed reciprocating plunger comprising a metallic bushingwhich is readily removable and capable of being replaced by the ordinary packed striding-boxes; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, as hereinafter described, and set forth in the annexed claims.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes the upper section, and A the lower section, of a double-acting pump-cylinder, said sections being united together by flanges A and bolts A leaving a space between the sections A and A. The opposing ends of the two sec- 3 5 tions A A are provided with concentric openings to receive a reciprocating plunger B, having a plunger-rod B, through which the reciprocatin g motion is imparted to the plunger by means of a steam engine or other motive power. Inclosing the central section of the plunger is a metallic bushing 0, formed in two parts 0 and 0 provided with flanges G and C, which are united by a series of bolts C The opening in the lower chamber A to 5 receive the plunger Bis made to fit the plunger, except at its upper end, where it is enlarged to receive the lower end of the bushing and form an annular chamber 0 around the bushing to receive a packing. The lower portion (3 of the bushing is provided with a flange G which is bolted to the lower section of the water-cylinder.
The openingthrough the upper section of the water-cylinder is larger than the plunger B, forming an annular chamber D to receive the upper end of the metallic bushing, and the opening is still further enlarged at its lower end to form an annular chamber D around the bushing to receive a packing, and the annular chamber D is closed by the gland E, provided with a flange E, which is bolted to the upper section of the water-cylinder.
The upper end of the upper section A of the Water-cylinder is provided with an opening large enough to allow the insertion or removal of the plunger 13, said opening being closed by a cap F.
hen the metallic bushing C is in place, the annular chamber D in the upper section of the cylinder is packed around the metallic 7o bushing and secured by the gland E, and the annular chamber 0 in the lower section of the cylinder is packed and the packing is sccured by boltin g the flange C to the cylinder.
When it is desired to remove the metallic bushing and packing, the cap F is removed and the plunger B raised above the joint in the metallic bushing at the flanges O 0 and the metallic bushing is readily removed through the space between the upper and lower sections of the cylinder by disconnectin g the upper and lower portions of the bushing by the removal of the bolts The gland E is loosened and the packing in the annular chamber D removed, and the upper portion of the metallic bushing is then raised by sliding it upwardly in the annular chamber D around the plunger. The bolts are then removed from the flange C and the lower portion 0 of the bushing removed, after which the upper portion 0', together with the gland E, are removed downwardly. If the use of a metallic bushing is not desirable, a short bushing is inserted at the lower end of the annular chamber D, in order to close the space 5 around the plunger, and the annular cham ber D will then form a stilling-box which can be packed and closed by a gland in the ordinary manner. The annular chamber 0 may also be packed and closed by an ordinary I00 gland, thereby packing the plunger at the lower end of theupper section A and at the upper end of the lower section A.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combinationwith a pump-cylinder comprising sections with an intervening space between said sections, and a reciprocating plunger, of a metallic bushing inclosing the central section of said plunger with its ends entering said cylinder-sections, said bushing being made in separable parts united at their ends, one of said parts being capable of sliding into one of said cylinder-sections, substantially as described.
