F. E. J. BRUHN. MEANS FOR ADJUSTING HEAD PIECES OF BEDSTEADS, M.
Patented Nov. 2, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
FRIEDRICH EDMUND JOHANNIS BRIIHN," OF HAMBURG,-GERMANY.
MEANS FOR ADJUSTING HE AD PlECEs OF BEDSTEADS, &c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,925, dated November 2, 1897. Applicationfiled February 25,1896. fierialNo. 580,625. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH EDMUND J OHANNIS BRUHN, machinist, of 10 Strohhause, Hamburg, in the Empire of Germany, have invented Improved Means for Adj usting the Head-Pieces of Bedsteads,Oouches, Sofas,
or the Like, of which the following is a speci-" fication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to adjustable headpieces for bedsteads, couches, sofas, or the like, which can be raised or lowered and fixed in any desired position in a very simple manner according to my present invention.
This invention is clearlyillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in' which Figure 1 is a plan view of a bedstead pro vided with the improved head-piece. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 00 cc, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a portion of the section shown in Fig. 2, drawn to a larger scale; and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the lever and toothed-rack arrangement shown on a larger scale, looking in the direction of the arrows y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail view .showing one of the retaining ratchets and pawls and the support for the latter.
In the frame A, which may be of iron or other suitable material, at the head ofthe bed, where the pillows are supported,an opening a is provided, in which a toothed rack a of curved form may work. This rack also passes between two side pieces or cheeks b b, which are fixed upon the frame A, and is adapted to be raised to any desired position by means of the toothed wheel d, which is keyed or fixed onto the spindle c and is actuated by the one-armed lever t, arranged beside it on the spindle-or axis 0.
On the spindle c, which carries the toothed wheel d, and on both sides of this toothed wheel, ratchet-wheels e and fare cast or fixed, with one of which, f, a pawl is, pivotally mounted on the pin h, which is fixed on the cheek 27', engages, while a pawl Z, fixed to the side of the lever t by a pin 25, engages with the other ratchet-wheel 6. By means of these two pawls the toothed wheel dis prevented from rotating, and consequently the toothed rack a is prevented from sliding down.
A guard or cover or flap 0, which may be made of bars, laths of iron, or other suitable material, between which wire-netting may be stretched, is hinged or pivotally arranged on the frame Afor instance, by means of the axis q, journaled in the lugs or mounts r-to receive the bolster or pillows. This guard or cover 0 is directly connected with the toothed rack a by any suitable means, such as hinges, and will thus be raised or lowered, and with it the bolster and pillows, according to the position of the rack a.
In order to render it impossible for the flap o to come incontact with the gearing when the rack is allowed to slide down, the rack is provided with a stop 0..
So as to permit of the pawls k and l being released from the two ratchet-wheels when desired and the head-piece 0 lowered each of the said pawls is and Z is provided at the guide-pulley under the bedstead or sofa and then carried to any convenient point-for instance, over it, as shown-in the drawingsso that in such case the occupant of the bedstead orcouch can raise or lower the head part or flap 0, as desired. When the cord n iss1ackened, the arm 25 will fall, the pawl Z slipping over its ratchet ready to be again pulled up to raise the head-piece higher.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is 1. In an adjustable head-piece for bedsteads, couches, sofas or the like the combination with a hinged or pivoted flap such as 0 of a toothed rack such as a attached to said flap, a hinged lever such as t laterally arranged with respect to said rack a, a pawl operated by said lever, a ratchet engaged by'the pawl, a toothed wheel such as e connected with the ratchet and rack, means to impart motion from said wheel 6 to said rack a to raise and lower the flapo, a guide or pulley at or near the foot of the couch, and a cord extending from the lever over said guide, and back toward the head of the couch, substantially as described.
2. In an adjustable head-piece for bedstcads and other purposes, the combination of ahinged flap, a rack supporting the same, gearing engaging the rack, a ratchet and pawl holding said gearing from backward rotation, a lever, a pawl on the same also connected with the gearing, a cord connected IO with the lever, and a cord connected with both of said pawls, substantially as described. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
