Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mott, in the county of Siskiyou and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Window-Awnings, of which the followingisa full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to window-awnings, and particularly to supports therefor; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved support for window-awnings and an improved shade or cover for the awning when not in use.
The invention is fully`disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a window provided with my improved awning-support, the awning being removed and a part of the construction being shown in section; Fig. 2, a sectional side view of the awning in position; Fig. 3, a front view of a detail of the construction on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 4 a side view thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown an ordinary windowframe, consisting of the sides 5, the top 6, and the bottom 7, and in the practice of my invention I provide a window-awning 8, which is connected with an ordinary spring-roller 9, and the spring-roller 9 is mounted in a casing or shield 10.
The casing or shield 10 is circular in form and closed at both ends and open at thelower side, and the spring-roller 9 is pivotally supported at the end of said casing, as shown at 11, or said roller may be supported by the frame of the window.

The awning 8 is preferably provided with side pieces 14 in the usual manner, and these side pieces when the awning is in use are connected with the sides of the window-frame by hooks or other fastening devices, as shown of the frame, and said plates are provided with pivot-pins 21 and with circular disks or plates 22, on the outer side of each of which is formed a circular or segmental shoulder or projection 23, and mounted on or connected with each of the pivot-pins 21 is a curved spring 24, one end of which bears upon the lower end of the corresponding circular or segmental shoulder or projection 23, Vand the other end of each of said springs operates beneath a pin 25, secured to the adjacent arm 1S. The object of this construction is to throw the arms 18 upwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1 when the window-awning is raised, and pivotally connected with the outer ends of the arms 18 are brace-rods 26, which are adapted to be connected with headed pins or similar devices 27, secured to the sides of the window-frame.
The braces 26 are provided on their under sides and near their free ends with transverse notches or recesses 28, which are adapted to receive the pins 27, and the object of said rods is to hold the lower end of the awnawning is in use.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof. The back of the casing orshield 10 is pro- IVhen the awning is not in use, the rods 26 are disconnected from the pins 27, and the spring-roller 19 will operate to raise the awning, vsaid awning being rolled on said springroller, as will be readily understood; but, in order that the roller 9 may operate, the side pieces 14. of the awning are first disconnected from the sides of the frame of the window and IOO ing in the position shown in Fig. 2 when said folded inwardly adjacent to the inner side of the main part of the awning, and when the awning is raised the arms 1S and the rods 2U will assume the position shown in Fig. 1.
The awning may be disconnected from the arms 1S and drawn upwardly, so as to be entirely concealed within the shield or casing 10, and said shield or casing 10 will serve as a protector for the awning and protect the same from the elements when not in use, or the arms 18 ,may be made long enough to reach from their pivotal points at 19 to the upper portion of the window-frame, if desired.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
Having fuliy described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An awning attachment for windows, consisting of a shield or easing which is adapted to be secured to the frame of the window at the top thereof, said shield or casing being open at its lower side, and being provided with a spring-rovller which is mounted therein, an awning connected with said spring-roller, and devices connected with the lower end of said awning for holding the same in position when in use, said devices consisting of spring-operated arms which are connected with the lower end of the awning, and with thc sides of the window-frame, and brace-rods connected with the outer ends of said arms and adapted to be connected with pins or projections secured to the side of the window-frame, substantiall y as shown and described.
2. An awning attachment for windows consisting of a shield or casing which is adapted to be secured to the frame of the window at the top thereof, said shield or casing being open at its lowerside, and being provided with a spring-roller which is mounted therein, an awning connected with said spring-roller, and devices connected with the lower end of said awning for holding the same in position when in use, said devices consisting of spring-operated arms which are connected with the lower end of the awning, and with the sides of the window-frame, and brace-rods connected with the outer ends of said arms and adapted to be connected with pins or projections secured to the side of said window -frame, said awning being also provided with side pieces which are adapted to be detachabl y connected with the sides of the window-frame, substantially as shown and described.
