SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,843, dated October 19, 1897.

Be it known that I, BYRON W. KELLOGG, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Vern onville, Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleigh-Knees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in sleighs, and has more particular relation to braces or knees for connecting the sleigh beams or frame with the runners.

The invention is intended principally to do away with the usual inclined bracing-rods employed in connection with the frames of sleighs to brace the runners laterally against all strain.

The invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a rear elevation of a sleigh with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the sleighknee embodying my invention; and Fig. 3 represents a central vertical section through the same, the sleigh beam and runner being also shown in section.

It will be observed from the foregoing description that the bolt (1' answers the fourfold purpose of holding the knee to the beam, the runner to the knee, the shoe to the runner, and also acting as a brace. By the employment of my improved knee no inclined brace-rods need be used, as the formation of the said knee is such as to form an efiectual brace for the runner against any lateral strain. One of said knees may be attached to or removed from the sleigh without removing the runner or any of the remaining knees by simply removing the bolts 01 and d and the rivets passing through the plate 0 V .In themanufacture of my said improved knee I prefer casting the same in one integral casting and of a suitable metal to guarantee the required strength. If at any time any one of the knees should become broken, it can readily be removed and a new knee secured in its place without taking the sleigh apart.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a sleigh-knee, the combination with a flanged box or casting adapted to be secured to one of the sleigh-beams, and provided with bolt-apertures in' its bottom, of spaced inclined braces secured to the under side of said box at its opposite edges, and each comrisin a main su ortin -bar and a bracin bar extending at an angle thereto, an angular attaching-plate secured to the lower end of said braces and provided with extended apertured cars, a bolt adapted to be passed through the runner, said angular plate, the box or casting and the sleigh-beam, and suitable rivets adapted to be passed through the apertures of the extended ends and the sleighrunners, substantially as described.
