Description
I the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylva being had to the annexed drawings, making UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE,
yTHOMAS WELHAM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FR SPINNING DIRECT FROIVI THE DOFFER 0F CARDING-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,106, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS VVELHAM, of
nia, have invented a new and useful Machine for Spinning Wool, Cotton, or other Material direct from the Doffer of a Oarding-Engine; and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference part of this specification, in which- Figure l indicates a side elevation; Fig. 2, an end elevation; Fig. 3,a view of the general plan; and Figs. 4 and 5, a sectional view of the spinners.
The letters A indicate the carder the letters B, the doffer; the letters C, the spinners; the letters D, the spool, motor-shaft, and drawingroller, around which the spun thread is wound one, two, or more times, so as to draw it from the spinners when spun and feed it to the spools; the letters E indicate the motor-shaft for the. spinners C; the letiers F, the spoolspindles; the letters G, the frame; the letters H, the spool bed-frame; the letters I, the spools; the letters K, the traversing` threadguide; the letters L, the eccentric that moves this guide; the letters M, the carders crankhandle; the letters SS, therollers in spinners C, and between which the thread when spun passes into and through the spinners-cylinder to the drawing-roller D to be spooled.
The Aspinners C are connected by belts to the motor E, which is also connected by belts to the crank-shaft M, upon which the carderA is affixed. Motion being` given to the carder A by the erankMwill, by the strapping indicated by the red lines, drive the doffer B, the cylinder E, and the spinners C, placed in front of the doffer B, upon an adjustable bed-frame,v R, so as to spin wool, cotton, or other ber directly from the doft'er B. The distance from Spinning by this arrangement is direct from the doffer. The material to be spun being held by the rollers S S aftixedin the spinners C, is made to pass, when spun, through the cylindrieal sh aft thereof by the drawing-roller D, from which it is spooled upon the spools I I, aflixed upon the spool-staffs F F F.
When' yarn of two or more threads is rel quired, the same can be spun by having one or more sets of the spinners C affixed in the rear of the (iOffer-spinners, but in front of the drawing-roller D, so as to have the yarn, when y spun, spooled, as described.
The several parts of this apparatus for spinning direct from the doffer may be made of any material and size suitable.
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' 1. The combination, with the doffer B of a carding-engine, of the adjustable spinner-bed B, as and for the purpose described.
2. rlhe combination, 'with the doft'er B of a carding-engine, of the spinners 0,-constructed and operating as and for the purpose described.
3. The arrangement of the spinners C with inclosed rollers S, the adjustable spinner-bed B., and spools I, operating as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
THOS. WELHAM.
Witnesses I. L. HUSBAND, WM. H. BUTLER.
