TATES PATENT FFIGE.
MATTHIAS S. RIOKEL AND J. S. RIOKEL, OF GENESEO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEAT-DRILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,077, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we,M. S. RIOKEL and J. S. RIOKEL, of Geneseo, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Wheat-Planter; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of our invention, partly in section, as indicated by the line 00 a, Fig. 2; fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same; Fig.3, a side sectional view of the same, taken in the line 00 .90, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for planting wheat in drills and alternating the wheat-drills with elevated oat-drills, for the purpose of protecting the wheat in winter.
A represents a rectangular frame, which is mounted on two. wheels, B B, one, B, being placed loosely on the axle, and the other, B, secured firmly to it.
O is a seed-box, which is placed transversely on the rear part of the frame A, extendingits Whole length and divided into two compartments by a longitudinal partition, a, and these two compartments are each subdivided into smaller compartments 1) 1) 0'0 by partitions d. (See Fig. 2.) The lower edge of the partition a is notched, as shown at e, to form a communication between the rear compartments, 0 c, and the front compartments, 1) I). (See Figs. 1 and 3.) The partitions din the two longitudinal compartments of the hopper are in line with each other, and consequently the compartments 1) b o 0 will be in line with each other, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
D is a slide which is placed over the partitions in the front longitudinal compartment in the seed-box, and has the upper ends of agitators E fitted in it, said agitators being constructed of plates fitted on rock-shafts 6, one in the upper part of each compartment 1) b,
' the lower ends of the agitators just clearing the bottom of the hopper. The slide D has a reciprocating motion imparted to it by means of a crank-shaft, F, at one end of the seed-box, said crank-shaft being actuated by a pitman,
ones and moved or adjusted by lovers 7; at their ends. These plates are all perforated with holes j of equal diameter, and by adjusting the 'upper plate, It, the capacity of theholes may be varied to regulate the flow of seed as required, the discharge of seed being cut off by adjusting the lower plate, h".
J represents seed-conveying tubes leading from the compartments 1) in the front part of the seed-box, and J are similar tubes leading from the compartments 1). The wheat to be sown is placed in the compartments 1), and the oats in the compartments 1), the seed being placed in the corresponding compartments 0 c at the rear of the seed-box, and passing through the notches c in the lower edge of the longitudinal partition (4. The agitators E insure the free flow of seed from the compartments 1) I).
K represents a series of-plows or furrowopeners, one directly in front of each tube J. These plows or furrow-openers are attached tothe lower ends of standards 70 at the rear ends of bars L, the front ends of which work on a rod, 6, placed transversely in the front part of the frame A. These plows or furrowopeners have an up-and-down motion communicated to them by means of springs M and cams M on a shaft, N, the latter being rotated by a pinion, m, gearing into wheel f of B. The lower ends of the tubes J project a little in advance of the tubes J and between the shares or furrow-openers K.
0 represents rollers fitted in the lower ends of framesP, the upper ends of the latter being placed loosely on a shaft, Q, at the rear part of the frame A. There is a roller, 0, directly behind each tube J and plow K, and these rollers serve to roll the wheat into the earth.
From the above descriptionit will be seen that the oats willbe sown in drills between the drills of wheat, there being alternately a drill of wheat and a drill of 'oats, the former, in consequence of being dropped in furrows, being below the cats, which are covered by the shares J and J arranged substantially as described,
K as they open or form the furrows to receive the wheat. By this means the wheat is protected during the winter.
Having thus described our invention, what WG- claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The-hopper 0, provided with communicating apartments 1) b c c, as shown, and plates h h h, in combination with the agitator B, suitably operated and provided with the tubes for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the plows K, swingin g bars L, springs M, and cam M, constructed and operating substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
