j j d ed W/emg UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
CHARLES E. BURROUGHS, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO JOSEPH A. REED AND ALFRED M. TRUE, OF SAME PLACE.
CUSHIONED HORSESHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,513, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed June 14, 1897. Serial'No. 640,691. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BUR- Ro'UGHs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the shoe properly attached. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the shoe-body. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the elastic or cushion tread. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the retaining-bar. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through line as as,
Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a transverse section showing the arrangement of the different parts.
Fig. 7 is a detached view of oneof the screws. Fig. 8 is a view showing the retaining-bar properly attached, also showing the cushiontread properly located.
The present invention has relation to horseshoes known as cushioned shoes; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawrugs.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the metal portion of the shoe, which is provided with the nail-apertures a and the screw-threaded apertures 11, said apertures being located and arranged at the toe and heels, respectively, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The body A is provided with the downwardlyrofectin flan e cwhich flan e is locatedp C) h 7 23 and arranged as illustrated in the drawings and is for the purpose hereinafter described.
In use the bodyA is attached to the horses hoof in the ordinary manner, after which the tread B is placed upon'the under side of the body A, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 6. The elastic tread B is provided with the flange cl, which flange is formed integral with the tread B, by which arrangement the tread is L-shaped in cross-section, as illustrated in Fig. (5. The tread B is formed of a thickness so that it will extend a short distance below the bottom of the flange c, by which arrangement the horse receives the full benefit of the elasticity contained in the tread B. After the tread B has been placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 the retaining-bar O is placed upon the under side of the flange d, formed upon the tread B, and said bar securely held in proper position by means of the retaining-screws d.
The binding-bar O is formed of a shape to correspond substantially with the shape of the body A and is placed in the position illustrated in the drawings to securely hold the 6 tread B. For the purpose of providing a sufficient amount of metal to securely hold the retaining-screws cl the bosses d are provided on the body A, which bosses are located substantially as illustrated in the drawings and over which the retaining-bar C is placed, said bosses 61 being formed of such a thickness that when the retaining-bar O is brought into proper position it will securely bind the tread B. The bosses (2 should be set in a short distance, so that the tread B can be placed in proper position without interfering with said bosses. The flange 0 should be slightly curved, as illustrated in Fig. 6,'so that it will assist in holding the tread B in proper position.
It will be understood that the tread B is to be composed of rubber or like material, by which arrangement a cushioned shoe is provided.
It will be understood that many modifications of my invention can be made without departing from the true nature of it.
Having fully described rnyinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letgo ters Patent, is
l. The combination of the metal portion A, provided with the nail-apertures alocated through said metal portion near its outer edge, and the screw-threaded apertures b 10- cated at the toe and heels respectively, and the downwardly-projecting curved flange c, the elastic tread B provided with the flange (Z located upon the under side of the body A and against the curved flange c, the bindingbar 0, located upon the under side of the flange d and against the downward-projectedge, and the screw-threaded apertures 10- cated at the toe and heels respectively, and the downwardly-projecting clamping-flange c, the elastic tread B provided with the flange cl, located upon the under side of the bodyA and in contact with the flange c, the bindingbar 0 located upon the under side of the flange d, and the retaining-screws d, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES E. BURROUGHS.
