lMP RO'V ED MOLE PLOW.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,049, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM MILLER, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mole-Blows for Inserting Drain-Tile; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, makiu g a part-of this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of the machine in operation 5 Fig. 2, a transverse longitudinal section of the tile, showing the cords; Fig. 3, an end view of the last section or length of tile; Fig. 4, a front view of the standards for raising and adjusting the beam-lever; and Fig.

The nature and object of my invention consist in providing the cuttingbar of the plow with a cutting-brace; in attaching such brace with the upper end of the bar to an adjustable beam-lever, and pivoting the cutting-bar to the draw-beam; in providing the draw-beam near its front end with uprights or standards, and inserting and arranging a crank-shaft, ratchet-wheel, pawl, and chain, for the purpose of elevating and sustaining the beam-lever, by means of which, with the pivotal attachment of the plow to the draw-beam, the point of the plow can be elevated or depressed, so as to regulate the grade or inclination of the drain; also, in connecting the sections of the tile by means of two or more cords, so arranged and located that the sides of the tile will be kept in line by them, and allow them to be bent upward while the whole section is being drawn in.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
The beam A is made of the usual length and dimensions for such plows, and mounted on a pair of wheels, B, so that the rear end over balances the front slightly. At the rear end of this beam the colter F is attached by a pivot'al bolt, a.
The colter is provided. with a cutter-brace, E. The colter and brace are made sharp, and
I the brace from its inclined position operates as a sod-cutter. It passes through the beam A, and at its upper end is attached to a beamlever, B, as is also the upperend of the colter. The front end of this lever is placed between two standards,(l, which are attached to the beam A and extend upward about three feet. At the upper end of these standards I place a shaft, N and crank D, substantially as shown at Fig. 4.
A chain passes from the shaft N to the end of the beam-lever B, and by turning the crank the end of thelever can be elevated, and will be held in place by means of the ratchet-wheel P and pawl Q. This arrangement will be found sufficient, as the action of the plow in the earth will keep the chain taut. By this arrangement of the lever and pivoting the colter to the main beam I am enabled to change the grade of the drain at pleasure, as by winding up the front end of the lever B the point of the plow G is elevated, and it will then work upward, and by unwinding the point is depressed and the mole will work downward. I am also enabled to make the colter lighter or of less material by the use of the brace E.
The brace and colter can be made of a single piece of metal, as shown; or they may be made separate and bolted or riveted together. The mole H is made as shown at Fig. 1, and as shownQand described in Letters Patent is sued to me August 9, 1859, except that there are no internal shoulders or ledges.
The two hooks L L are inserted in the mole so that the distance between them will be equal to the internal diameter of the drain tile J J. I then take as many lengths of tile as can be conveniently handled, and make a section of them by drawing two cords through the section. These cords I I or wires are attached at the front to the hooks of the mole, and at the rear end of the section are attached to the cross-bar K and pressed against the sides of the inner sides of the tile. By this arrangement I can keep the tile in line, as the cords or wires keep them in line laterally, and the bed or bottom of the earth-drain will keep them so vertically; and as the earth-drain made by the mole is somewhat larger than the tile they are easily drawn in, and as the cords only bind them at the sides the section, while being drawn under, can pass over uneven surfaces without injnry.
In ordinary soils several sections may be drawn under without any excavations for the plow, and additional sections maybe attach ed directly to the bar K or to the cords and the bar be Withdrawn.
Where the cords are left in the tile the bar K is countersunk into the tile, as shown. When it is to be removed this need not be done.
This machine and arrangement of cords enable me to insert tile for underground draining which will operate as successfully as that laid in trenches dug by hand, and by laying planks for the truck to travel over, with the aid of a spirit-level, 1 can lay the tile so as to insure its successful operation.
The machine is drawn by the use of a capstan, in the ordinary manner.
Having thus fully described" my invention and improved machine, I will point out what 'I claim as new.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cutterbrace E, when attached to a pivotal beam-lever and movable colter, substantially as specified.
' 2. The arrangement and combination of the colter F, cutter-brace E, and pivotal lever B with the standards 0, provided with ratchet and pawl, and beam A, substantially as specifled.
3. The arrangement and combination of the hooks L L, cords I I, and cross-bar K with the mole H or G, for inserting two or more lengths or pieces of drain-tile, substantially as set forth and specified. I
