UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
OTTO VOLLRATH, OF BUCYRUS, OHIO.
WINDOW-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,469, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed August 21, 1896. Serial N0. 603,534, (No model.)
[o all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, OTTO VOLLRATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have'invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Window-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to produce a two-part window-screen that can be easily inserted and readily removed entirely from the frame; and it consists in forming the screen in two trapezoidal parts which work or ride up and down one upon the other, so that when it is desired to remove the screen one part is slid upon the other, so as to reduce the width of the screen, and the screen removed from the frame.
My invention further consistsof certain details of construction that will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of a portion of a window-frame, showing my screen applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on the line Il II, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a view of the two parts of the screen detached.
In the said drawings, 1 represents an ordinary window-frame, 2 the sash sliding therein, and 3 the screen. y
The screen 3, as will be seen, is formed into two parts, each part of which is in the form of a trapezoid. The frame of each part is of any material, preferably of wood, the several pieces of each frame being secured in any desired manner, and each part is covered with screen material 4c. The long side of one part is formed with two tongues 6, providing a groove 6 in the form of a channel, and the long side of the other part is formed with two rabbets 5, providing a tongue 5, adapted to slide in the groove, so that when the frame is in position it will be secured and the two parts locked together at the meeting edges of the two parts, and the screen cannot be removed until the parts are unlocked.
It will be noted from the drawings that at the corners 7 and 8 of the two parts enough is cut away so as to form two trapezoids, which permit sufficient movement to allow one part to be moved on the other Within the window-frame, so that the whole screen can be easily separated and removed. The operation of my screen is as follows: The lower part 9 is first put in place in the frame and then the part l0 is inserted by having its diagonal slide on the diagonal of the part 9 until the space in the frame is covered, after which the window-sash is brought down and rests upon the part 10. When it is desired to remove the screen, the sash is rst raised and the part l0 moved upon the part 9 a suflicient distance to permit removing the screen from the grooves in the window-frame. Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new'therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A window-screen adapted to fit in the opposite sash-grooves of a window-frame comprising two correspondingly-shaped trapezoidal parts each of less width than the opening in the window-frame; the long diagonal side of one part having two tongues providing a channel between them and the diagonal side of the other part having two rabbets providing a central tongue adapted to iit and slide in the channel; substantially as described. l
OTTO VOLLRATH.
