Description

UTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. B. JUcKET, 0F ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIeNon To HIMSELF AND HUNNEMAN a Co.,
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED FLY-WHEEL AND'CRANK-SHAFT..
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,032, dated October 23,1866.
nal and vertical section, of the said invention.
In such drawings, A B denote tWo separate shafts, arranged with their axes in 011e straight line. Each shaft has a bell-crank, C or C. These cranks are so arranged that when one is horizontal the other is vertical-that is, they make a right angle with each other in the matter of their directions relative to their respective shafts.
On the inner end of each shaft is a y-Wheel, D, and the two y-Wheels have one or more connection-Screws, E E, passing through one of and being screwed into the other of them. v By means of Such screws the iiy-Wheels may be either connected or disconnected, as occasion may require. The journals a a of each Shaft are to be supported in suitable boxes b b.
This arrangement and application of iiy- Whee1s,crankshaft, and connection or connections of the y-wheels is specially intended for use iu steam fire-engines having two working steam-cylinders, the connecting-rods of Whose pistons are to be jointed to the two cranks. It
enables the iiy-Wheels to be used together forv either or both engines, or to be separated and one used with one engine only. There aretimes when one only of the engnescan be used,-
particularly when an accident may occurto one. Whenprovidedwiththemeansofdisconnecting their lily-Wheels, one engine may be at-rest While the other `may be in action. When the ily-wheels are connected, one en gine will assist the other inrevolving its shaft, Such arising from the arrangement of the cranks.
I claim- The arrangement and combination of the twoshafts, their cranks, the ily-wheels, and the connecting screw or screws, or the equivalent thereof, the Whole being substantially as described.
E. B. JUGKET.
