-OHARLES I. BENOIT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRINDING-MILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,977, dated October 23, 1866.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLEs P. BENOIT, of Detroit, \Vaync county, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Crushing Grain, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the employment or use, in a machine for crushing grain and other materials, of two rollers, one of which is grooved in a longitudinal and the other in a transverse direction, in such a manner that the grooves of one roller hold the grain or other material to be crushed in position for the other roller to act upon, and a machine is obtained by which the operation of crushing grain, 850., can be eti'ected with ease and facility, and with comparatively little expenditure of power.
A represents a frame, of wood or any other suitable material of snfiicient strength for the occasion. This frame forms the bearings for the crushing-rollers B (3, one of which is provided with longitudinal grooves a, and the other with transverse grooves b, as clcarl y shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Said two rollers run close together, and they may be so arranged that the distance between them can be adjusted to the material to be crushed.
By the combined action of the longitudinal and transverse grooves a b in the surfaces of the rollers the operation of crushing grain, malt, and other materials is greatly facilitated and much time is saved, and, furthermore, the grain is crushed in pieces of uniform size, which in many cases is of great importance.
I disclaim any of the parts the subject-matter of the patent of S. \V. Powell, December 4, 1849 but I do elai1n The machine for crushing grain, consisting of the longitudinally-grooved roller B and the transversely-grooved cylinder 0, arranged to operate substantiallyas described, for the purpose specified.
I CHARLES P. BENOIT.
