FREDERICK I. DANA, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE THOMAS PHILLIPSCOMPAN-Y, OF SAME PLACE.
EXPANSIBLE PU LLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 588,898, dated August 24:, 1897.
' Application filed August 27, 1896. $e1'ial No. 604,105. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: the product of the machine correspondingly Be it known that I, FREDERICK I. DANA, of increased.
Providence, county of Providence, State of The invention consists in the features Rhode Island, have invented certain new and and combinations hereinafter described and 5 useful Improvements in Expansible Pulleys; claimed.
and I do hereby declare-the following speci- The accompanying drawing shows a longification, taken in'connection with the accointudinal section of a pulley and its operating panying drawing, formingpart of the same, to means embodying the present improvements be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. in their preferred form. to The present invention relates to that class As shown in the drawing, the pulley A con1- of pulleys which are so constructed that their prises any desired number of sections 1, (two diameter may be increasedor diminished at only of which are shown,) provided with pro- Will and to the means for varying the diamejecting bars or arms '2, which are adapted to ters of such pulleys, and has forits object the slide radially in guides 3, formed on the hub 15 construction of a pulley of the above class 4:. The sections 1 maybe moved radially by which may be readily applied in those relaany suitable means which is so constructed tions in which expansible pulleys are emthat it maybe operated while the pulley is in ployed and which may be quickly and accumotion and, as shown, is so moved by means rately adjusted to the desired diameter withof a slide 5, acting through arms 6 and toggles 7o 20 out stopping the rotation of the pulley. 7. The toggles Tare formed by the arms 8 Expansible pulleys are frequently used as and 9, pivoted together at 10, the arms 8 bedriving-pulleys for machines, the speed of ing pivoted at the opposite ends to the hub 4 which must be frequently varied to suit the at 11 and the arms 9 being pivoted at their varying conditions of the material passing opposite ends to projections 12, formed on 2 5 through the machine, and when such pulleys the bars 2. The arms 6 are pivoted to the have been used they have commonly been of toggles '7 at 10 and to the slide 5 at 13. such a character and the means for varying The slide 5 may be operated by anysuitable their diameter has been so constructed that means under the control of the operator, it has been necessary to stop the rotation of which is so constructed and connected with o the pulley, and thus the operation of the masaid slide that said slide may be operated chine, when the diameter of the pulley was to while it and the pulleys are in motion, and be varied to vary the speed of the machine, in the drawing is shown one form of such opand the production of the machine thus reerating means, which is as follows: duced proportionally. Moreover, in such Surrounding the shaft 14, to which the 3 5 cases the variation of the diameter of the pulley is secured, is a non-rotatable screwpulley to produce the necessary variation in threaded member in the form of a sleeve 15, speed was necessarily a matter of guesswork provided with a flange 16, which fits Within and several stoppings and adjustments were a recess formed in the slide 5, being held frequently necessary before the exact variatherein by a collar 17, secured in the end of 40 tion in the speed required for the proper opsaid recess by the screws 18. An antifriceration of the machine was attained' WVith tion-washer 19 is interposed between the end the present improvements, however, the diof the sleeve 15 and the end of the recess. ameter of the pulley may be quickly and ac- The sleeve 15 fits and slides within a stacurately varied without interfering in any tionary bracket or support 20 and is held 5 4 5 way with the running of the machine to which from rotation by a screw 2] the end of which the pulley is applied, and the means for vaprojects into a slot formed in said sleeve,- rying the diameter of the pulley is always The end of the bracket 20 is oounterbored to under the direct control of the operator, and form a bearing for a screw-threadedmember thus the speed of the machine may be graduin the form of a nut 22, which does not rotate mo 56 ally and quickly changed to produce the best with the pulley, but is normally stationary results without stopping the. machine and relative thereto. The nut 22 engages the threads of the sleeve and is held from longitudinal movement by the screws 23, which enter a groove formed in said nut. Ahandwheel A is secured to the nut preferably by being formed integrally therewith.
The operation is as follows: When the pulley A is in motion, the slide 5 rotates therewith While the sleeve 15 and the nut 22 remain stationary and through the connections described maintain said pulley at a constant diameter. If it is desired to vary the diameter of the pulley, it may be quickly and accurately done without stopping the pulley by moving the hand-wheel El, thus causing the nut 22 to move the sleeve 15 and through it the slide 5 in either direction. The movement of the slide acts through the arms 6 and toggles 7 to move the sections 1 either toward or away from the hub of said pulley, thus contracting or expanding said pulley.
\Vhat I claim as my invent ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with an expansible pulley, of means for varying the diameter of said pulley comprising a screw-threaded member normally stationary relative to said pulley, and a non-rotatable screw-threaded member operated by said former member, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with an expansible pulley, of means for varying the diameter of said pulley comprising a slide, a non-rotatable screw-threaded member for operating said slide, and a rotatable nut normally stationary relative to said pulley for operating said screw-threaded member, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with an expansiblc pulley, of means for varying the diameter of said pulley comprising a slide, a non-rotatable screw-threaded sleeve for operating said slide, and a rotatable nut normally stationary relative to said pulley for operating said slide, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with an expansible pulley comprising radially-movable sections, of toggles connected to said sections, a slide for operating said toggles, a non-rotatable screw-threaded sleeve connected with said slide, and a rotatable nut normally stationary relative to said pulley engaging said sleeve, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a pulley provided with radiallymovable sections, of toggles connected with said sections and said pulley, a slide, links connected with said slide and said toggles, a non-rotatable screw-threaded member for operating said slide, and a rotatable nut normally stationary relative to said pulley for operating said screw-threaded member, substantially as described.
