""sANp BAND.
UNITED STATES vPATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. FREASIER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SAND-BAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 588,818, dated August 24, 1897. Application iiled December 23, 1896. Serial No. 616,792. (No model.)
l claimed.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a sandband. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken longitudinally of the axle through the hub of a wheel and illustrating the application of the band shown in Fig. 1 to Vvthewheel and the axle, vparts being broken away yto ec'onomi'ze space. Fig. 3 lis alsectional view taken approximately on the line 3 3 ofy Fig. 2.
The sand-band consists of the disk 4, annular wall 5, formed integral with the edge` of said disk, and the tongue G, cut from said disk and bent outwardly at right angles toY said disk. One end of the side lines upon which the tongue 6 is cut extends entirely to the edge of the disk 4. The device thus formed is stamped from sheet metal. The opening 7, which is formed in making the tongue 6, is of such a Width that it will receive the axletree 8 and have the sides of said opening engage closely against the sides of said axletree.
The axletree 8 is substantially square in cross-section, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. At the junction of the axle 9 with the axletree S is an enlarged cylindrical portion 10. The inner end of the skein 11 is enlarged to receive the cylindrical portion 10, and the end face 12 of said skein engages against the outer face of the disk 4. An annular groove 13 is formedv aroundA the cylindrical portion 10, midway of its ends -The annular recess 14 is formed from the inner end of the hub 15, immediately outside of the inner end of the section 11 and in position concentric with the cylindrical portion 10. The sand-band is placed in such a position that the annular wall 5 will engage in said recess 14 and that the disk 4 will engage the inner end face 12 of the skein and with the tongue 6 upon the upper face of the axletree. The sand-band position.
is placed in position by having the axletree inserted through theopening 7 before the two ends of the axletree are welded together. The band 16 is placed around the inner end of the hub, and the inner faces of the cylindrical portion 10, the skein 11, the hub 15, and' the band 16 are in alinement.
The Wooden section 17 of the axletree has a recess 18 formed in its lower face and extending a sufficient distance from its end to receive the tongue 6. The wooden section 17 is placed in position against the upper face of the axletree S, with its end firmly against the inner side of the disk 4 and with the tongue 6 in the recess 18. The clip 19 is then placed around the axletree S and the wooden section 17, as required to hold said parts securely together, thus holding the sand-band firmly in The shoulder formed at the junction of the axletree with the cylindrical portion 10 prevents the sand-band from slipping toward the hub 15, and the end of the wooden section 17, engaging the inner face of the disk 4, prevents said sand-band from slipping toward the center of the axletree 8, and the end of the Wooden section 17, resting upon the tongue 6, prevents the sand-band from rolling and holds it in position concentric with the axle. When thus applied, the sand-band will prevent sand and dirt from passing into the skein of the hub and will prevent oil from passing outwardly from said skein toward the Vaxletree 3.
My object is to construct a sand-band comprising a solid or continuous annular Wall of the smallest possible diameter. The annular wall must encircle the inner end of the skein of the hub, and a disk-shaped wall must beformed integral with the inner edge of the annular wall and t against the inner end face of the skein. A sand-bandv of this construction never has been and cannot be placed in position upon the axle after the two ends of the axletree have'been welded together, especially when it is desired that the diskshaped wall extend across the dividing-line between the inner face of the skein and the inner face of the shoulder uponthe axle and engage the inner face of said shoulder.
The apparent disadvantage attendant upon placing the sand-bands .in position upon the axletree before the axletree is welded is a lOO welded together, the disk 4 engaging the inner face of the cylindrical portion 10 and the end of the skein, and the annular'wall 5 operating outside of the skein and inside of the hub and said sand-band being held securely in position, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature 2o in presence of two Witnesses.
