Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCEC E. MCKINNEY, OF CLARKSIVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-OIL STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58.862, dated October 16, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, E. MGKINNEY, of Clarksville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvementin the Application ot' Petroleum as a Fuel for Stoves, Furnaces, &c. and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part ot' this specification. y
The drawing represents an elevation of a stove7 partly in section, with my improvement applied to it.
i This invention relates to a new and improved means of feeding or supplying petroleum .to stoves, furnaces, &c., to serve as afuel for the same.
The invention consists in the employment or use of water or other Huid having a greater specific gravity than the petroleum, and placing the former in an elevated tank or reservoir communicating with the lower part of the petroleum-chamber by means of a pipe, so that the petroleum will be fed to the iire pan or chamber by static pressure.
The accompanying drawing exhibits the invention applied to a stove; but substantially the same arrangement of parts is employed in all cases, so far as the mere feeding or supplying of the petroleum to the fire is concerned.
A represents the external cylinder or drum of a stove; B, the base thereof, and C the lfirepan, to which the petroleum is fed into a bed of sand or other substance, on the surface of which the petroleum is burned.
D represents the petroleum-chamber, placed in the lower part of the drum A, and commu nicating with the center of the pan C by a pipe, E, provided with acock, F.
G is a pipe provided with a cock, H, leading from the petroleum-chamber.
I is an elevated tank or reservoir7 which is at the outerside of the stove and above the re-pan C, said tank or reservoir communicating by a pipe, J, with the bottom of the petroleum-chamber D. The space between the top of the chamber D and the fire-pan C is filled with water, in order to guard against eX- plosions7 the water keeping` the petroleum in the chamber D in a cool state.
From the above description it will be seen that the petroleum will be fed up to the firepan C by static pressure, the superior gravity of the water or other liquid in I causing the petroleum to remain on the surface of the former, and admitting of the apparatus being quite portable, the oil itself, or other fluid as light, requiring a much more elevated reservoir.
The supply of the petroleum to the tire is regulated by the cock F.
Having thus described my invention7 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The feeding or supplying of petroleum to stoves or furnaces by means of water or other fluid of a greater specific gravity than the petroleum, placed in an elevated tank or reservoir above the petroleum-chamber, and communieating with the latter in such a manner as to feed the petroleum to the tire-pan or fire-chamber by static pressure, substantially as described.
E. MGKINNEY.
