SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,606, dated August 24, 1897.
Application filed \Tune 13, 1896- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. ROTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading,
county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Vegetable- Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
vMy invention relates to an improved com- 'bination vegetable-cutter which is adapted to perform either of the several operations of cutting or slicing, shredding or stripping, or grating, with facility and in a perfectly-satisfactory manner.
. The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features are specifically pointed out in the claims.

This wheel is dished to form a bulging or convex working face, and has a rearwardlytapering hub B, filling the space between the bearings a a Upon this tapering hub is adj ustably secured a knife-arm F, the base f of which slides forward or backward upon the hub and is fastened at any desired point by means of a set-screw F, which engages a slot f in the base, while the knife-attaching portion f passes freely through an opening I) in the web of the wheelin a direction practically at right angles'to the inclined face of the wheel, thus allowing the cutting edge of the knife F to be set a greater or less distance from the outer working face of the wheel to regulate the thickness of the out. by means of very simple changes, I provide for both shredding and grating attachments to the cutter-wheel F, said grater, shredder, and wheel being relatively of peculiar construction, whereby the necessity of,removing either of the cutting devices from the wheel while the device is being used as a grater is avoided. vThe former attachment consists of a toothed bar G, which fits reversibly in an opening b in the wheel, and has flanges g, which lap over the edges of the opening. This bar has a series of cutting-teeth g projecting from one face, which face is setoutwa'rd when the machine is intended to operate as'a'shredder. At other times the bar is inserted in the opening I)? reverselythat is, with the teeth at the rear and in either case it is firmly held in the opening by means ofa locking mechanism which consists, as shown, of a cap-piece H and a swinging arm I,'which is oppositely notched at its opposite ends, so as to engage or disengage headed screws 1 1', projecting rearwardly from the wheel through perforated bosses h h of the cap-piece. The lower edge h of the cap-piece bears upon the flanges g g of the toothed bar G, thus securely holding the latter when the notched arm I is turned under the heads of the screws, and a slight movement of the'latter serves to tighten or loosen the cap-piece. I
The grater-disk J is dished similarly to the wheel B, but to a somewhat greater extent, and is secured to the outer face of the'latter by means of a flanged center piece J, which is strung upon the shaft K and serves to press the grater-disk against the face of the cutter-wheel by means of a nut 7' the outer edge of the grater-disk being thus forced outward against a circular offset 17 near the periphery of the cutter-wheel, thereby securing proper rigidity of the grater, which may also be positively prevented from turning, if desired, by providing a projection on the rear of the disk to engagea recess or opening in the cutter-wheel.
The nut J 2 preferablyenters a recess in the center piece J, which latter enters a central recess in the face of the wheel in order to reduce the projection of the nut beyond the face of the wheel. 1
- The supporting-casing A A is fastened to ashelf or table, as usual, by means of a suitable bracket A and the front portion A is provided with a feeding-table D, arranged to slide in and out upon a fixed bracket C, having a slotc, in which the clamping-screw cl moves. The inner edge 0 of the feed-table is adapted to serve as a lower shearing-blade, and is adjusted so as to just clear the rotating knife F whether the latter be adjusted for a thin or thick cut, thus insuring the cleanest possible cutting action. This portion of the casing is also recessed interiorly, as indicated at a so as to permit the projecting portion of the thumb-nut J which fastens the graterdisk, to be handled with thegreatest convenience in placing or removing the disk.
The rear portion A of the supporting-casing is provided with bosses a and a upon which to mount suitable gear-wheels, (not shown,) through which to give a rapid rotary motion to the cutter-wl1eel B. In connection with the frontportion A it forms a chute-like extension for conveying the cut material to a bottom outlet (L7, through which it is delivered into a suitable receptacle. The casing is completed by a cover E, which is hinged at ct to the supporting-casing A A and conveniently fastened to the outer end 6 by suit able means consisting in the construction shown of a swinging bolt 6 with thumb-nut, which is pivoted between lugs (l on the supportingcasing and swings into or out of engagement with jaws e on the cover. An opening 6 in the front of the cover, guarded by a projecting flange 6 allows the material operated upon to be held in contact with the working face of the cutter-wheel while resting upon the feed-table D.
By my improved construction I have provided a neat, compact, and comparatively inexpensive machine which is adapted to do a great variety of work in a rapid, satisfactory, and cleanly manner. The knife-arm is readily adjusted upon the tapering hub of the cutter-wheel, the knife moving substantially at right angles to the inclined wheel-face, as stated, and when properly set it cannot be moved outward from its position by the force of the out, which tends to pull it forward and thereby increase the depth of the cut. The toothed cutter or shredding bar is always in place, with the cap ordinarily covering the teeth, and needs only to be reversed to throw it into operation, which is very easily done.
The dished grater-disk provides a rigid operating-surface when attached to the cutterwheel as described, does not require the removal of the knife or shredding-bar, and is itself easily applied or removed.
The construction as specifically described and shown may obviously be considerably modified without departing from the spirit of my invention.
lVhat I claim is 1. In a vegetable-cutter the combination with a supporting-casing of a rotary cutterwheel having a convex or conical working face, a tapering hub, and a knife-opening,
and a knife-arm guided upon and ad justably secured to the tapering surface of said hub to regulate the projection of the knife through said opening, substantially as set forth.
2. In a vegetable-cutter the combination with a supporting-casing of a rotary wheel mounted therein and formed convex on the outer face,with a circular offset at the periphcry and a separately-formed dished graterdisk removably secured to said outer face by means of a flanged center piece and a nut e11- gaging a screw-thread on the wheel-shaft, the outer edge of said grater-disk seating against said circular offset, substantially as set forth.
3. In a vegetable-cutter the combination with a supporting-casing of a rotary cutterwheel having a radial opening 11 a cutterbar reversibly fitting said opening and having a series of cutter-teeth projecting from one face thereof and the opposite face plain, and means for reversibly securing said outter-bar in said opening, all substantially as set forth.
4. In a vegetable-cutter the combination with a supporting-casing of a rotary cutterwheel having a radial opening 6 a cutterbar reversibly fitting said opening and having a series of cutter-teeth projecting from one face thereof, a rear cap for said cutterbar and means as described for removably securing the bar and cap to the wheel substantially as set forth.
5. In a vegetable-cutter the combination with a supporting-easing of a rotary cutten wheel having a rearwardly-extending hub and a knife-openin g, and a knife-arm guided upon and adj ust-ably secured to said hub to regulate the projection of the knife through said opening, the knife-attaching portion'of said arm passing freely through said opening in a direction approximately at right angles to the face of the wheel, substantially as set forth.
6. In a vegetable-cutter the combination with a supporting-casing, of a rotary cutterwheel mounted therein and having a convex or conical working face, and a separatelyformed grater-disk of sheet metal dished or concaved to a slightly greater extent than said outer face, and clamping mechanism for firmly seating said grater-disk against said face substantially as set forth.
7. In a vegetable-cutter the combination with a rotary cutter-wheel having a convex working face and a central recess, and with a centrally-perforated sheet-metal grater-disk fitting against said face, of a flanged center piece and a nut engaging the wheel-shaft to fasten said disk, said nut entering a recess in the center piece, and the latter entering the central recess of the wheel substantially as set forth.
8. The combination of the rotatable wheel, having cutting means permanently attached thereto, and provided with an offset around its periphery, and fastening means strung upon the shaft of said wheel, said fastening means and offset being designed to cooperate in securing a dished grater removably and rigidly in place over said cutting means, substantially as described.
9. The combination of the dished cuttingwheel, having an ofiset around its periphery, a sleeve having a recess in its end, a flanged center piece strung upon the shaft of said wheel and entering said recess, and a binding-nut for said center piece, the whole being designed to cooperate in securing a dished.
grater-disk removably in place upon said wheel.
10. The combination with a wheel having an offset around its periphery and provided with cutting devices, of a dished grater-disk having its periphery engaged with said offset, and means for clamping said disk over said cutting devices and so that it will rotate with said wheel. a
11. The combination with the cuttingwheel, having an offset around its periphery, of a sleeve, having a recess in its end, a flanged center piece strung upon the shaft of said wheel and entering said recess, a binding-nut for said center piece, and a dished grater removably held in place by said offset, center piece, &c.
12. A vegetable cutter,sh redder and grater, embodying a wheel formed with radial openings, an adjustable cutter projecting through one of said openings, a cutter-bar reversibly fitting in the other opening and having a series of cutting-teeth projecting only from one face thereof, and a removable grater, having a flanged center piece and a nut for attaching it to the wheel over said cutter.
13. A vegetable cutter, shredder and grater, embodying a dished wheel, formed with radial openings and with a circular offset at its periphery, an adjustable cutter projecting through one of said openings, a cutter-bar re versibly fitting in the other opening and having a series of cutting-teeth projecting only from one face thereof,and a separately-formed dished grater-disk, removably secured to said outer face, by means of a flanged center and a nut, the outer edge of said grater-disk seating against the circular offset, as specified.
14. The combination with the dished wheel, having an ofiset around its periphery, of a cutter-bar, reversibly fitted to said wheel and having teeth projecting from one of its faces only, a removable grater-disk mounted upon the shaft of said wheel and having its edge seated against said offset, and means for clamping the center of said disk against the wheel, as specified.
