H. DE SOTO. STICK 0R UMBRELLA HOLDER.
Patented Aug. 17, 1897.
. Wi nesses UNITE- STATES ATENT FFICE.
' I'IERNANDO Dir soro'or DRESDEN, GERMANY.
STICK OR UMBRELLA HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,498, dated August 17, 1897. Application filed October 2, 1895. Serial No. 564,449. (No model.)
To all whom it marl] concern,"
Be it known that I, HERNANDO DE Soro, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cityofDresden, Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Devices for Supporting alking-Sticks, Umbrellas, or the Like, of which the following is a specification. 1
The device constructed according to this invention serves in theaters, waiting-rooms,
gardens, and other public places the purpose most convenient and suitable means to which the apparatus may be applied, it is evident that the application of the apparatus to other articles of furniture is equally practicable,
all such chairs or other articles of furniture being hereinafter for convenience referred to as supports. 7
On the accompanying drawings are shown various applications and modifications of the apparatus. In all these there is a common feature viz., a clip or loop adapted to surround a bar or other body or support towhich the appliance is to be attached, and a springcontrolled or spring ring" jointed to the said clip in such manner that it tends always to press the object slipped through or under it close up against the support. V
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of device constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form of device shown attached to a support, the latter shown in section. Figs. 3 and 4 are elevations at right angles to each other of another modification.
Like letters and numerals indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
first bent to form a small ring or loop 10 and is then bent to form a larger or main ring A, the free ends of the wire being then twisted around each other, as at 1 1, to form coiled springs, and then being formed into a holding-clip B, which is adapted to embrace a chair-leg or other support for the device, the ends of the clip being formed into a hook and eye, respectively, to more firmly and durably secure the clip to the support.
In Fig. 1 the clip is shown as turned inward and held by the supplemental ring 10 to permit the device to be readily carried on the person.
In the practical operation of the device the arms of the clip B are opened by the hands and caused to engage the support, the main ring A, with its supplemental ring, 10 being normally kept at right angles to the plane of the clip B by the coiled springs 1 1. When introducing a stick or umbrella or other object, the ring A is lifted while it swings or pivots upward against the tension of the coiled spring 1. The stick or umbrella is then passed through the ring and the latter is again set free and thereupon tends to resume its original position, and inasmuch as it is prevented from doing so by the inserted article it holds the same firmly between itself and its support, as will be readily understood. By having the smaller supplemental ring, thinner and smaller sticks may he slipped into the appliance, and, moreover, this supplemental ring assists in fixing or securing the object inserted and, besides, prevents the possibility of its slipping out upon a smooth floor.
Instead of twisting the wires at the points 1 to form coiled springs, as previously described, the connection between the clip and By this construction the rings are rendered elastic and extensible, so as to yield when required, whereby the ring can be made extremely restricted and yet be capable of extension, so that after the stick or other object has been pushed in it will contract thereon and hold it fast.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4: instead of forming the ring and clip with one piece of wire a separate sheet-metal clip is employed, and an eye is formed in and upon the clip B, through which the Wire ends of the ring A are passed, the ends 6 of the wire being bent into the forms of hooks resting against the surface of the metal clip and act like springs.
I claim- 1. In an umbrella and cane holder, the combination with the main supporting-ring, the supplemental ring, the clip for holding the device to its support, and the spring between the main holding-ring and support; substantially as described.
2. In an umbrella and cane holder, the com bination with the main supporting-ring, the clip for holding the device to its support, and the coiled spring between the main holdingring and clip; substantially as described.
3. In an umbrella and cane holder the combination with the extensible, main supporting-ring, the extensible supplemental ring and the clip for holding the device to its support, and the spring between the main holding-ring and clip; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
IIERNANDO DE SOTO.
