UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK GEORGE BRUBAKER, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
CAR-STEP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,123, dated August 17, 1897.
Application filed February 15, 1897. Serial No. 623,571. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK GEORGE BRU- BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Steps, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to car-steps and thel object thereof is to provide steps which are usually employed in connection with railwaycars, with a Ysupplemental adjustable step which is connected therewith and adapted to be lowered; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a side view of a pair of car-steps of ordinary construction provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 a back view thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown a pair of ordinary carsteps, which consist of two downwardly and outwardly directed side plates 5, and a plurality of stationary steps (5, which are secured thereto, andin the practice ofv my invention I provide a supplemental bottom step 7 ,which is provided at its rear side with upwardlydirected arms S, whichare secured thereto in any desired manner and which pass through keepers 9., secured to the lower two steps 6- and 7, and connected with the upper ends of the arms 8 are chains or similar devices 10, each of which is connected with a crank 11, formed on a rod y12, which is mounted in keepers 13 at the back of one of the upper steps and. which is provided at one end with a spring-crank le, and the spring-crank arm la is provided with a rack-bar or lockingplate l5, which is secured to one of the sides (5.
The supplemental or bottom step 7 is also provided at its ends and near the front thereof with'rods or bars 16, which are secured thereto in any desired manner and which pass through keepers 17 secured tothe sides 5 of the steps, and these rods or bars 16 are each provided at its upper end with a cross-head 18.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description When taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof;
Whenever it is desired to lower the bottom step 7, the spring-crank arm 14 is pulled ontwardly and disconnected from the rack-bar or locking-plate 15, and said crank-arm is turned upwardly, and this operation turns down the crank 11, and the step 7 will at once drop into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and may be used as an ordinary step, as will be readily understood, and when it is desired to raise said stepthe crank-arm 14 is turned down into the position shown in Fig. 2 and locked therein.
This device is'simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a set ofcar-steps of a supplemental step connected with the bottom thereof, and adapted to be lowered -and raised, said supplemental step being provided at the back thereof with arms or bars which extend upwardly through the keepers connected with the main steps, and whichare provided at their uppervends with chains, the other ends of which are connected with cranks formed on or secured to a horizontal rod, said horizontal rod being mounted in bearings on the rear side of the main steps and provided at one end with a spring-operated crank which is provided with a lock-bar or locking-plate secured to the said steps, and said supplemental step being also provided at each end with rods or bars which extend upwardly through keepers connected with the sides of the main car-steps, substantially as and for the purpose described. VV
In testimony that I clairnthe foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 12th day of February, 1897. A
FRANK GEORGE BRUBAKER.
