Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE RICHARD I). ESTEP, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN VALVES FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,796, dated'October 16, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD P. Es'rnr, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-En gine Valves 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to steam-engine valves of the oscillating description, and consists in sc arran ging the ports and faces of the valve and the ports and faces of the valve-casing that the valve is nearly balanced in all positions, and, being slightly conical and provided With elastic adjustment, can be operated with the least possible amount of friction under varying temperatures.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of steamcylinder and valves embodying my invention.
. Fig. 2 is a section on the line x Fig. 1, showing one of the valves, together with the device for its elastic adjustment.
A B are the valve-chambers, provided with diametrioally-opposite steam-ports C C' D D', for the admission of steam into the interior of the chamber on opposing sides.
The ports C C and D D are connected with the supply-pipe by a semi-annular passage, E
lGr H are the cylinder-ports, and I J are the exhaustports.
The valves K L are slightly conical, (see Fig'. 2,) and are constructed with balanced wings M N M N', which act to simultaneously open and close the opposite steam-ports C C D D', and an exhaust-Wing, O and P, tted snugly to the interior faces or concavities of the chambers A and B, respectively.
Each valve stem or shaft projects beyond the head of its valve-ch amber, and is provided With an arm, Q and R, which, being connected by a rod, S, enables the valves to be vibrated simultaneously by means of any customary connection with a cam or eccentric.
Fig. l shows the valves at the part of the stroke when steam is entering the cylinder at the ri ght-hand end thereof and escaping at the other end, the steam entering the valve-chamber on diametrically-opposite sides ofthe saine.
It will be seen that the entire valve-movement is readily accessible by simply unbolting either head of the valve-chamber.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- The bala-need, yielding, and adjustable threewinged valves K L, one or both, arranged and operating in the manner substantially as described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
RICHARD P. ESTEP. Witnesses:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, JAMES H. LAYMAN.
