UNITED 4STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN AUGUST HILOKEN, OE BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ICE CHEST oR`Box.
SECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 587,819, dated August 10, 1897.
Application filed April 23, 1897. Serial No. 633,468. (No model.)
T0 all whom zit may; concer/L:
Be it known that I, JOHN AUGUST HILOKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice ChestsAV or Boxes,
of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ice-boxes; and the object thereof is to provide an ice-box of the ordinary form with improved means for drainage; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved ice-box, said section being taken longitudinally thereof; and Fig. 2, a similar section at right angles to that of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement-are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide an ice box or chest 5, which is preferably rectangular in form and in one side of which is hinged the usual door 6, and said box or chest is provided with transverse cleats or strips 7, which are secured to the inner sides of the walls thereof and above which are placed longitudinal cleats or strips S, which are supported by the cleats or strips '7, adjacent to the side walls of the box or chest.
Supported by the longitudinal strips or cleats 8 are a plurality of transverse supports 9, any desired number of which mayv be employed, and mounted on the transverse supports 9 are partition plates or boards 10, which are separated at the center by a longitudinal space 11, and the plates or boards 10 are longitudinally grooved on their upper surfaces, as shown at 12 in Fig. 2, and are provided with a sheet-metal covering 13, which conforms to said grooves and the edges of which are bent upwardly, as shown at 14,
so as to form a receptacle, in which the ice is placed.
The longitudinal opening l1, between the plates or boards 10, is covered bya longitudinal plate 15, composed of metal or other material, and the' metal employed for covering the plates or boards 10v and the metal of the plate or board 15, if metal be employed, is such that will not corrode or be injuriously affected by fluids.
Placed transversely over the corrugated surface ofthe plates or boards 10 and over the plate or board 15 are trays or supports consisting of transverse strips 17 and longitudinal strips 18, and in practice the ice is placed upon these trays or supports.
At one end of the plates or boards 10 is a transverse groove or trough 19, and communicating therewith is a drainage-pipe 20, and the plates or boards 10 are downwardly inclined in `the direction of the groove or trough 19, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and when the ice is placed on the trays or supports, composed of the transverse strips 17 and longitudinal strips 18, the water therefrom will pass downwardly into the longitudinal grooves in the upper surface of the plates or boards 10 and will flow into the groove or trough 19 and be carried away by the pipe 20.
There are narrow air-spaces beneath the plate or board 15 at each side thereof, as shown at 21, and the airis free to pass from the upper chamber 22 of the ice box or chest to the lower portion thereof and from said lower portion to the upper portion.
It will be observed that the plates or boards 10 and the parts connected therewith, including the metal covering of said plates or boards, constitute a partition by means of which the ice chest or box is dividedV into an upper and lower compartment, and by means of my improvement the icebox or chest may be kept perfectly clean at all times and the water y IOO zlailn as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An ice box or chest of the usual form, provided with partition plates or boards, which are supported therein, and which are downwardly inclined from one end to the other, said plates or boards being provided with longitudinal grooves in the upper surface thereof, and being separated by a longitudinal space, which is provided with a covering-plate, and ice trays or supports placed over said plates or boards and said coveringplate, and a transverse groove or trough at one end of said plates or boards with which said longitudinal grooves in said plates or boards communicate, and a pipe which communicates-with said transverse groove or.
trough, substantially as shown and described.
2. An ice box or chest, of the usual form, provided with partition plates or boards which are supported therein, and which are downwardly inclined from one end to the other, said plates or boards being provided with longitudinal grooves in the upper surface thereof, and being separated by a longitudinal space, which is provided with a covering-plate, and ice trays or supports placed the upper surface thereof, and which also conforms to said transverse groove or trough, substantially as shown and described.
3. An ice box or chest of the usual form, provided with partition plates or boards which are supported therein, and which are downwardly inclined from one end to the other, said plates or boards being provided with longitudinal grooves in the upper surface thereof, and being separatedby a longitudinal space which is provided with a covering-plate, and ice trays or supports placed over said plates or boards and said coveringplate, and a transverse groove or( trough at one end of said plates or boards with which said longitudinal grooves in said plates or boards communicate, and a pipe which communicates with said transverse groove or trough, said partition plates or boards being provided with a metal covering which conforms to said longitudinal grooves formed in the upper surface thereof, and which also conforms to the bottom of said transverse groove or trough and the sides of which are carried upwardly adjacent to the inner Walls of the box or chest, substantially and described. V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 22d day of April, 1897.
JOHN AUGUST HILCKEN.
