To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES R. MCKIN- sTRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mercersburg, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk- Pails; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain ne7 and useful improvements in Ymilk-pails, the object being to provide a novel construction of pail adapted to strain the milk as soon as it is drawn from the cow, and so constructed as to prevent spilling of the milk ltherefrom when thesaid pailis accidentally kicked or turned over.

To this end my invention relates to certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts in a pail of the class described, as Will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, Figure l is a perspective view of a milk-pail constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional vieW of the same. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the pail, showin g the valve-chamber-supporting plate removed. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective and part vertical sectional view of the valve-chamber and its supportingplate. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the antisplasher.

In carrying out my invention I employ a bucket or pail l, having a body of ordinary construction provided Wit-h a spout 2, by

. means of which the milk may be poured from readily admit a hand Within the pail, so that the pail may be quickly and conveniently cleaned Whenever desired. The edge of the top at the said opening is provided with a circumferential flange b. A combined valvechamber and strainer comprises a conicalshaped chamber 7, rigidly attached at its upper end to a circular supporting-plate 8 and projecting through said plate and having an opening 9 to the atmosphere. The lower end ofthe conical valve-chamber is provided With a foraminated or perforated bottom 10, and a ball-valve 1l within the said valve-chamber normally rests upon the said perforated plate, leaving, however, sufiicient room for the passage of the milk therethrough, as will be hereinafter described.

A strainer comprises a circumferential threaded attaching collar or flange l2, to which a strainer 13, consisting of cloth or a perfo'- rat-ed plate, is attached. The valve-chambersupporting plate 8 normally rests upon the circumferential flange 6 in the depressed center of the concaved top 4 and fits .therein closely enough to prevent dislocation under ordinary circumstances. By this construction it will be understood thatwhen the pail is kicked or otherwise turned over the ballvalve 1l rolls doWn the conical valve-chamber and closes the opening 9 therein7 so as to prevent the milk Within the pail from spilling out through said opening.

Instead of employing the ball-valve I contemplate employing a flap-valve, it being understood that in such case these valves Will llave position adjacent to the opening 9 in said conical chamber.

From the above description it Will be understood that the milk, as soon as it is drawn from the cow, passes down the concaved top 4 through the opening in the said valvechamber and through said valve-chamber and the strainer attached thereto to the body of the pail or bucket. By straining the milk as soon as drawn and inclosing it Within a covered pail the milk is not exposed to access of dust, dirt, or disease germs.

Around the entire top of the bucket or pail I have provided an antisplasher 14 to prevent splashing of the milk as it is drawn. This antisplashing device is provided with hooks 15, which are adapted to engage with lugsl IOO on the pail-body l and thus secure the antisplasher to the said body.

My invention provides a simple, durable, and efficient construction of milk-pail which prevents access of dust, dirt, or other foreign elements into the milk and from which the milk cannot be spilled When the pail is turned over. The milk-pail, While comprising these advantages, maybe manufactured at a comparatively small cost.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A milk-pail comprising a paildoody provided with a top or cover having a depressed center with an opening therein and securinglugs, a plate seated in said depressed center and provided With `slots to enable the plate to be fitted over the lugs and then turned to engage the same, a valve-chamber secured in said plate and provided with a vent-0pening and at the lower end thereof With a perforated plate, a valve in said chamber, a pendent strainer, and a ring threaded onto the lower end of the valve-chamber and clamping the strainer thereon, substantially as described.
