SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,081, dated July 6, 1897.

Beit known that I, WARREN EUGENE WAR- NER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this 1o specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

My present invention has for its object to improve the construction and operation of that class of book-holders in which the supports for the covers are connected for simultaneous operation in opposite directions, so thatthe surface of the leaves of the book will be held approximately horizontal at all times; and it consists in certain improvements in zo construction and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and the novel features pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

The holder forming the subject-matter of my present invention is adapted to be applied to any suitable support or standard, on which it is preferably rotarily adjustable, and in the present instance 1 indicates a standard adapted to be applied to any suitable base, and to the upper. end of this is attached a socket-piece 2, provided with aV set-screw 3, and having at its upper end a substantially plane portion 4, to which is pivoted the lower end of the frame of the holder, a bolt or pintle 5 forming the connection and about which the frame 6 of the holder maybe tilted to incline the book as may be desirable or necessary, a set-screw 7 engaging the plate 4 5o and holding it in adjusted position, as will be understood. The frame 6 has rigidly secured to its upper end a book-support S for engag- `ing the back of the book and supporting it at all times, and pivoted to the center of the frame and upon a bolt 9 is a lever 10, preferably in the form of a plate having a flange 11 at the edges, cooperating with a suitable cover-plate 12, pivoted upon a boss cr eXtension 13 on the main frame 6, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, thereby concealing the operating parts from view and making a neat finish. Pivoted upon bolts or pins 14, upon the ends of the lever 10, are vertically-extending arms 15, which are connected above the pivot-bolts 14 by means of a lever 16 pivotally connected at 17 with the frame 6 and having at the ends eyes or apertures, into which pass the projections 18 on one side of the arms 1-5. This form of connection obviates separate bolts and cheapens the construction, as the parts may be readily cast and secured by three bolts. The upper portions of the arms 15 are provided with outward extensions or ways 19, upon which are adj ustably secured brackets 20, said brackets having the bifurcated lower ends connected by clampingscreWs 21, by means of which the said brackets may be moved on the ways 19 on the arms to adjust them nearer to or farther from each other. The upper portions of said brackets 20 are provided with trunnions or lugs 22, engaging suitable recesses or seats 23, formed in plates 24, to which latter are connected the book-cover supports 25. The recesses 23, with which the trunnions engage, extend to the bottom of the plates 24, and said plates when removed from the cover-supports 25 may be attached to the brackets 20 by passing the trunnions or ears up from the under side, the parts being secured by springs 2G, fastened beneath the plates 24 and engaging an arm or projection 27, formed on the bracket 20. This spring not only serves as a means of connecting the parts, but also holds the cover-supports 25 in vertical or in flat position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, by reason of its engagement with the arm 27.

Suitable projections 31 on the brackets cooperate with the plates 24 and operate as stops to limit the movement of the cover-supports, as will be understood.

When the book supported by the device is IOO not in use, the cover-supports are turned up to the position in full lines in Fig. 2 and the back of the book then rests upon the backrest 8, the covers being held closed by the supports 25, which are held by the springs 26. When the book is opened, the cover-supports are turned down to the position in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the cover-supports adjust themselves by reason of the

parallel levers

10 and 16, so that the open face of the book Will be held substantially horizontal, as usual in devices of this description.

To prevent the book from sliding off the supports When the device is tilted and secured bythe screw 7, the cover-supports 25 are provided With boards or flanges 30 at their lower ends, as shown in Fig. 7.

The cover-supports may be adjusted relatively by moving the brackets on the Ways 19, so as to receive thick or thin books.

By securing the back-support to the rigid frame 6 the book-back is less liable to be marred by opening and closing it and by reason of the vertical movements of the coversupports than When the back support is mounted upon a frame moving With the vertical movements of the cover-supports, as in other devices of this class.

I claim as my invention 1. In a book-holder, the combination with the frame having the back-support secured rigidly thereto, of the cover-supports on opposite sides of the back-support, arms and brackets connected to said cover-supports, and the parallel levers connecting the arms, substantially as described.

2. In a bookholder, the combination with the frame having the back-support secured rigidly thereto, of the lever-plate l0, the lever 1G, the covering-plate 12, the arms to which the levers are pivoted, the brackets on the arms, and the cover-supports pivoted to the brackets, substantially as described.

3. In a book-holder, the combination with the frame and the back-support thereon, of the lever 10, the arms pivoted to the ends of the lever, the lever 16 pivoted to the frame, and projections and recesses between the ends of the lever 16 and the arms, forming pivotal connections, and the cover-supports mounted on the arms, substantially as described.

In a book-holder, the combination with the frame and the back-support thereon, of the parallel levers pivoted on the frame, the arms pivoted to the ends of the levers having the Ways, the brackets having the integral clamping-jaws, the cover-supports, the plates thereon pivoted to the brackets, and the springs engaging the brackets and plates, substantially as described.

5. In abook-holder, the cover-support and the plate secured thereto having the lug-seats open toward the side next the cover-support, of the bracket having the trunnions or lugs entering said seats and the projections thereon, and the spring engaging the projection to hold the plate and bracket in engagement and also holding the plate in two positions relative to the bracket, substantially as described.

6. In a book-holder, the combination with the frame 6 the levers 10 and 16 pivoted thereon, and the arms 15 having the Ways, of the bifurcated clamp-brackets engaging the Ways and having the lugs and the projections 27, the plates 24, and the springs, substantially as described.
