TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,802, dated July 6, 1897'.
Application filed July 8, 1896. Serial No. 598,473. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES RVAUGHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walnut Shade, in the county of Macon and State of Tennessee, have invented certainV new and useful Improvements in Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
My invention relates to improvements in tables, the object of which is to produce a dining-table with compartments in an eXtension of the top or lid thereof for containing food and a rotatable cap or cover therefor provided with fans on its outer periphery for keeping the ies off the table.
Vith these objects in view the invention consists of a table formed with a circular top supported upon suitable legs and an extension of smaller diameter resting upon said top,the said extensionbeing divided up into compartments for containing food, each section thereof provided with a door, a false bottom, means for throwing said false bottom outwardly upon opening the door, and means for withdrawing same upon the closure of the door. Fitting over and surrounding said eX- tension is a cap or cover having an annular ange upon its lower side, provided with fans upon the outer surface of said ange, means for elevating said cap or cover, and means for rotating the same.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this speciication, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my table with the cap or cover elevated. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section, with the cap or cover in its lowered position. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4t is a detail perspective view illustrative of the false bottom in one of the food-containing compartments. Fig. 5 is a view illustrative of the false bottom in its closed position.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The table is preferably formed with a circular top l, supported upon legs 2, and formed with an extension 3 of smaller diameter than the top anddivided oft into a series of compartments 4, each compartment having a door -and a false bottom 6 thereto. The false bottoni 6 is provided with a lat-eral elongated slot 7 in which move two pins or projections ble, tending to keep said false bottom normally within the compartments 4. The false bottom 6 is adapted to hold any article of food that it may be desired to place thereon, and by opening the door 5 said false bottom containing the dishes placed thereon is thrown outwardly through the action of the cord 10, pulley l1, and lever 9.
Fitting over the extension 3 of the table is a cap or cover 13, provided with an annular flange 14 upon its under side, to which are connected fans 15 for the purpose of keeping O the flies during the rotation of the cap or cover. Said cap or cover 13 is mounted upon a shank or spindle 16, projecting downwardly through an opening in the top l of the table, upon which shank or spindle is a series of teeth 17, forming a rack with which engages a pinion 18, actuated through suitable beveled gearing by a crank 19, projecting from the side ofthe table. 16 has secured to it a beveled gear-wheel 20, with which engages a similar gear-wheel 21, which is actuated through a suitable shaft 22, mounted in bearings on the under side of lthe top 1 by the crank 23. A feather connection The shank or spindle is had between the shank 16 and the gearwheel 20, so that when the lid 13 is raised the two gear- wheels 20 and 21 will still remain in engagement one with the other.
In using my table in the summer time the cap or cover 13 is raised through the mechanism described to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, and then is rotated by the crank 23 or by other suitable means for the purpose of keeping the flies oif the food on the table. The food itself is kept in the com-I partments et, resting upon the false bottom 6, and may be taken therefrom upon the plates IOO which rest vupon the rim of the top l whenever desired. Inthe winter time the lid 13 is kept down upon the top l and the fans l5 are removed from their sockets therein. When the cap or cover is in this position, the doors 5, leading to the compartments 4, are completely covered and out of sight. It may then be used as a parlor-table, if desired.
I-Iaving now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a table, the combination with a top mounted upon suitable legs, of an extension having a series of compartments or receptacles therein, doors for closing said compartments, false bottoms operated by said doors and a cap or cover having a flange upon its under side adapted to fit over and surround said extension, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a easing having compartments therein, doors or covers for said compartments, a false bottom slidingly mountedin each of said compartments having a lateral slot therein, a spring for normally urging said false bottom inwardly, a pair of levers fulcrumed on a stationary part of the device and located upon the under side of said false bottom, pins projecting upwardly from one end of said levers and fitting the slot in said false bottom, and cords leading from the other end'of said levers around guide-pulleys and fastened to the inside of said door, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES R. VAUGHN. Witnesses:
