Description

(No Model) D. GAULD. EEEE MECHANISM FOR SEWING MACHINES.
Patented Julie 29,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL GAIILD, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE ILLINOIS SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FEED MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,201, dated Tune 29, 1897.
Application filed May 8, 1896. Serial No. 590,713. (No model.)
To aZZ whmn it may concern:
Be it known thatvI, DANIEL GAULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Mechanism for Sewing-Machines,of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct the mechanism for imparting the feeding movement to sewing-machines with buffers, which will to a great extent remove the noise in their operation; and it consists of bufiers placed within the cam-slot, against which the pin extending from the feed-bar comes in contact at the end of each reciprocation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometrical representation of my improvements. Fig. 2 is an isometrical representation of the cam-slot from which the face-plate has been removed. Fig. 3 is an isometrical representation of the cam-slot from which the face-plate and buffers have been removed. Fig. 4c is an isometrical representation'of one of the buffers.
To the end of the rock-shaft 1 is secured an arm 2, provided with a cam-slot 3, which receives a pin 4, extending from the feed-bar 5. The ends 6 of the cam-slot 3' are enlarged,
leaving a bottom 7, as shown at Fig. 3,within tion 9 of their face cut away of the same diameter as the main portion of the cam-slot, which forms the ends of the slot. After these buffer-pieces have been placed in position, as shown at Fig. 2, a face-plate 10, which surrounds the rock-shaft, is held in place by a screw 11, as shown at Fig. 1, and is provided with a slot 12, through which the pin 4 projects, so as not to interfere with its proper movement. At each oscillation of the rockshaft 1 one of the buffers will be brought in contact with the pin 4, and if it were not for these buffers the pin would come in contact with the metal, producing a noise which the buffers overcome. By this arrangement the buffer-piece can be easily stamped out of leather or other suitable material.
I claim as my invention-- In a sewing-machine, a feed mechanism comprising a rock-shaft, a head supported thereby having a central opening, the ends of the opening being enlarged and having its bottom contracted, buffer-blocks of yielding material placed within the enlarged ends hav ing their inner faces cut away in semicircular form, and a face-plate placed over the blocks holding them in position.
DANIEL GAULD.
