Be it known that I, JAMES H. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Oyole-Lamp Supports, of which the followingis a specification.

Lamps for vehicles, such as bicycles, have heretofore been provided with a support hinged at the rear, such hinge being made with a horizontal clamping pivot or screw upon which the lamp can be turned so as to throw the light forward or upward or downward, and the support for thishinge has been provided with a clamp whereby it may be connected to a dashboard or to any portion of a cycle, and clips have also been provided by which a lamp-support has been secured to the frame or fork of a bicycle.

The present invention is for holding the lamp in its proper position upon a clip, so that the lamp may occupy the desired position to the clipthat is to say, if the clip projects forward the lamp can be placed in line with the same, and if it extends laterally to the right or to the left the lamp can occupy an angular position to the same, so as to cast the light in the proper direction, and I provide a socket which may receive a vertical stationary support, and I also provide clips that are adapted to grasp a cycle-frame or dashboard, and these clips can be set at the desired distances apart according to the size of the article that is grasped by them.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the lamp support and clip. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is aplan View of the clip-pieces with a section of the plate into which the ends of the clip-pieces are hooked.

Any desired character of lamp maybe used with this improvement and the same 'is illustrated at A, and to the back of the same is fastened a bracket B, preferably in the form of a folded plate of metal fastened at the fold to the lamp and havinga clamp-screw O passing through the outer portions of the bracket, and the circular head of the post I) is received between the plates of the bracket 13, the clamp-screw passing through the same, so that by tightening the clamp-screw the post and lamp can be held in any desired position to which they may be set, so that the light will be cast in the proper direction.

The lower portion of the post D is polygonal, preferably square, and received between the clamp-plates E, that are bent angular to conform to the polygonal shape of the post, and the screw F holds the parts firmly after the lower end of the post D has been properly placed between the clampplates. Hence the lamp is held firmly by the clamp-plates and is not liable to change position laterally in consequence of the polygonal form of the post.

The clamp-plates E may be supported in any desired manner. I have represented the same as upon an oblong socket G, the sheet metal of the clamp-plates E being a continuationof the sheet metal used in forming the oblong socket, and within this oblong socket is preferably a lining of rubber H, and a clamp-screw I serves to press the lining of rubber against the edge of a supporting device, (illustrated by the dotted lines at K,) and as supports of this character are well known and are often formed with or attached to bicycle-frames it is unnecessary to describe the same further.

In some cycles a support for the lamp is not provided and a clip is required for connecting the support of the lamp-post to the frame or fork of the cycle, and with this object in View the separate clip-p1ates L L are provided, there being a screw N passing through the same for drawing the clip-plates toward each other. At one end of each clipplate is a hook 2, adapted to pass into a mortise 3 upon the plate 4:, which plate is advantageously fastened to the back of the oblong socket G, there being a sufficient space between the plate 4 and the sheet metal of the oblong socket for the ends of the hooks 2 to pass in freely, and it is advantageous to provide three or more mortises or slots in the plate 4: for the reception of the hooks 2, so that they may be applied to the same at the proper distances apart to adapt the clipplates to the cycle-frame, fork, dashboard, or other desired portion of the vehicle to which the clip-plates are applied.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination with the lamp and a bracket extending out from such lamp, of a post having a circular upper end received between the parts of the bracket, and a clamping-screw for holding the post between the parts of the bracket, the lower end of the post being polygonal, clamping-plates bent angular to receive the polygonal post, and ascrew for applying pressure to hold the post by the plates, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a lamp and its bracket, of a post, a joint having a horizontal clamping-screw for connecting the bracket and the post, an oblong socket adapted to receive and be held by a lamp-support and clamping-plates extending out from the oblong socket and grasping the lower end of the post and a screw for pressing the plates to the post, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with the lamp, of clipplates adapted to grasp the cycle-frame or other supporting device, and a screw for applying pressure, the clip-plates being hookended, and a plate connected with the lamp and having mortises in it for receiving the hooked ends of the clip-plates, substantially as set forth.

4:. The combination with an oblong socket and clamp-screw adapted to be received upon a lamp-support, of a connection between the oblong socket and the lamp and a plate With mortises in it fastened to the oblong socket, and separable clip-plates having hook-shaped ends adapted to hook into the mortises of the plate, and a screw for applying pressure to the clip-plates, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination with the lamp, of a bracket secured to the lamp, a post pivoted at its upper end to the bracket and havinga polygonal lower end and a support for receiving the polygonal lower end of the post, substantially as set forth.
