G. B.0STDIEK. VETERINARY QBSTETRIGAL FoRoEPs.
Paten-ted June 1, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GERHARD B. OSTDIEK, OF NEOLA, IO'VA'.
VETERINARY OBSTETRICAL FORCEPS.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,813, dated June 1, 1897.
Application inea June 30,1896. serial 110.597,59?. (Nomad.)
4To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GERHARD B. OsTDIEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Neola, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Forceps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to forceps, and has for its object to provide means for facilitating the connection and disconnection of the members thereof.
Further objects and advantages of this inl vention will appear in the following description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of forceps constructed in accordance with my invention, the members being connected. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the members disconnected. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the pivotal securing-plate or latch inverted.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures of the drawings.
The forceps consist of detachable members l and 2, provided at their point of intersection with flat bearing portions provided, respectively, with an opening or bearing 3 and a fulcrum-pin or stud 4.. Pivotally mounted upon the shank or handle portion of the member 2 is a securing-plate or latch 5, the same having an enlarged iat head 6, which covers the exposed end of the fulcrum-pin or stud when turned to the position illustrated in Fig. l. This securing-plate or latch is preferably mounted upon a fixed pivot 7 and is extended beyond said pivot to form an operating extension or arm 8, which may be pressed by the thumb of the operator to move the securing-plate into either its operative or inoperative position. This rear end or extension of the securing-arm is Within convenient reach of the thumb of a hand grasping the handle.
The device embodying my invention is particularly adapted for use as swine-forceps wherein it is desirable to provide means for positively securing the members in their operative positions, and from the above description it will be seen that by the use of the latch the parts may be connected or disconnected without loss of time and with the least exertion upon the part of the operator.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. Forceps having separate members adapted to be overlapped at their fulcrum-points and provided, respectively, with av fnlcrumpin and an opening adapted to receive said pin, the pin being adapted to extend through to the outer surface of the member having the opening, and a securing-plate or latch pivotally mounted upon the member carrying the fulcrum-pin and adapted to be terminally arranged over the member having the opening to bear upon the extremity of said fulcrum-pin,whereby detachment of the members is prevented, except when the securingplate or latch is deiiected to remove its `free extremity from engagement with said fulcrnm-pin, substantially as specified.
2. Forceps having separate members adapted to be overlapped at their fulcrum-points and provided, respectively, with a fulcrumpin and an opening to receive said pin, said pin being adapted to extend through to the outer surface of the member having the opening, anda securing-plate or latch pivotally mounted at an intermediate point upon the member having the fulcrum-pin, and adapted to swing terminally over the overlapping portions of the members, when connected, to bear upon the extremity of said fulcrum-pin and prevent accidental disengagement of the members, and having its oppositely-extending arm arranged Within reach of the ngers of a hand grasping the handle of the member, whereby said securing-plate or'latch may be swung in either direction, to lock or release the members, Without removing the hands from the handles of the members, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GERHARD B. O STDIEK.
