ELEOTRHZ GGNNECTQR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,589, dated June 1, 1897;
l Application filed January '7, 1897. Serial No. 618,373. No model.)
To all ibi om it ma-g concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. AUSTIN, :1 citizen of the United States, residing at linno-.
ver, in the county of Grafton ind State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Connectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art-to which it appertziins to make and use the same.
This invention relates to iinprovenients in connecting devices for electric 0on6: ctors, and has more particular relation to devices for forming temporary electric connections between the ends of wires.
The invention consists of the combinntion, with a-suitable containing insulating-ensing, of elastic closing-plugs for the same adapted to permit the insertion of the ends of conducting-wires into said casing and :1. conducting amalgam in said casing adapted to estziblish an electrical connection. between the inserted ends of the wire.
In the accompanying drawings, forming it part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation eta-conductor embodying my invention. Fig. 2' represents e central vertical section through the same. iki renresents a similar view with the wires inz-aerted. Fig.4 represents c central vertica section through a modified form of my invention for connecting three wires, and 5 represents e similar View of another form for connecting four wires.
A. in the drawings represents the casing, B B the closing-plugs, and G the ccndncting amalgam. The casing A is constructed of any suitable insulating material in the form of a; sleeve provided at each end with an. enlarged recess a, into which the clcsingplugs B are adapted to snugly fit. Ench'of these plugs is preferably constructed of rubber and isprcvidedwiih a central pin pzissege lnwhieh normally remains closed, and a daring month I) at the outer end of said passage. "ivhen said plugs 13 B are applied in their respective recesses a, the interior of the casin effectually sealed, es the passages-,1 through.
said pings when closed e practically tight. The inclos d space of the casing cetween said plugs is filled with :i eoiulueiiug amalgam c.
it will be observed from the foregoing description that should the ends of two electric conducting-wires be forced througlnthe pinnperturcs b of the plugs l; the ends of said wires will enter the conducting mnzilgmn and thus establish it perfect electric connection. it will also be observed that should the ends of thecolnlueting-wires be withdrawn from the iiexibleplugs B the apertures of said pl ugs will nutonmticnlly closozind thus prevent the escape of the conducting ziinnlgmn or the ent'rnnccof air, which would result in oxidizing said :inmlgzun.
The operntionoi the modified forms of my invention shown in Figs. at and 5 is practiczilly the same as that heretofore described, with the exception that the cont'ziining-cdsiii is provided with more entrance-apertures closed by sealing-plugs; so that it plurality oif wires may all be joined in the same circuit.
This invention is intended principally for laboratory use in experimenting,dkc. as 1*. dc: sired electrical connection may be insinntly nnideor broken without the usuul iroublesome winding of the wire.
Ha ng thus described my invention, \vhzii s li 3\\',lll(l desirctc proeureby Letters mat, is-- 1'. inzinelectricconneclorthe combination insertion of n. wire, and which norninllvresod, and it conducting uninlgnin in ing ztditpted to establish an clean-ice! 11. between the inscried ends oi the "li'OS. electrical connector the combination with a suitable conininii k ising, having a plurality of flexible sealing-pings zipplied in said openings, and each formed with n pin-aperture having n flaring month; said apertures being adapted to n'ornnilly renmin closed, and a. eonduetiing:unnlgmn in said ezisa conducting mnnlgmn in said casing adapted to (Slilbllhll nn elevLrien-l connection bet-ween the inserted ends u[ the wires.
ln iesiinmny \i'liereef I have signed thin speeilivniimi in the presence 01' two subscribing \Vll'ihnifivfi,
l"l AN K E. AUSTIN.
