Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,343, dated September 25, 1866.
.declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and `represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 11s a4 side elevation of it, with its vbaGk-frame elevated into its highest position.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of it, showing the back-frame as depressed to its lowest positlon. Fig. 3 is a top view ot it.
In such drawings, Ais a frame composed of4 two side pieces, 6ta', connected4 by one or more cross pieces or bars, b, and having two rollers, 'c d, arranged within, as shown in Fig. 2, they being extended from one side piece to the other. and sol applied to the two as to be capable of freely revolving on their axes. Each of such side pieces is curved 011 its upper edge to the arc of a circle, and is provided with two feet or legs, e e, to support it on a tlor, the whole being as exhibited in the iigures.
A movable back-frame, B, formed with armrests ff, and in other respects as represented, rests on the side pieces ot' the frame A, and is to be adapted to such frame in such manner as to be capable of being slid thereon from the position shown in Fig. l into that exhibited in Fig. 2, lor vice versa. To the head-rest or cross-bar g of the back-frame one end ot' a sacking, O, is fastened, such sacking being carried partially around the front roller, c, and from thence to the back roller, d, to which the other end of the seeking is fastened.
A leg-rest, D, is supported by two metallic arms, g g', extending from the roller c at its two extremities, such arms being shown in Figs. l and 3. Each side piece of the backfraine B has one of two levers, h h, jointed to it, as shown at t'. (See Fig. 2.) rEhe said lever turns on a fulcrnm or pin, 7c, projecting from the lnner side of one of the side pieces of the supporting-frameA. The said pin or fnlcrum goes through a slot, t, made lengthwise in the lever. To each of the said levers an arm, m, is jointed, and extends toward and is jointed to the next adjacent arm g' of the leg-rest.
Another such arm is jointed to each lever 7L, and to one of two arms, o o, projecting from the ends of the roller d, such roller being not only for the purpose ot'. giving support to the sacking, but for taking up the slack thereof during a forward movement of the chair-back frame.
Olamp-serewspp, or their mechanical cqnivalents, may be applied to the baclrfranie B, and so as to screw against the rail or side pieces of the supporting-frame A, the same being in order to hold the back of the chair at any dcsirable inclination within its range of motion. The back-frame mayalso be held to the supporting-frame by legs q q, extended from the backframe into curved slots r r, made in each side piece ot` the frame A and parallel with the upper edges of the said side pieces.
On moving the said chair-back frame forward the leg-rest will be depressed, and the saeliin g will be wound on the back roller, d. A reverse motion ot the back-frame will cause, through the action ot1 the levers and arms, the back-frame to be depressed and the sacking to be unwound from the roller d.
I claim- The above-described improved reeumbent chair, consistin g of the supportin g-frame A, the movable back-frame B, the sacking O, the legrest, and the levers, arms, and rollers, as ex plained, or their mechanical equivalents, constructed, arranged, and applied substantially in manner and so as to operate together as `hereinbet'ore specified.
