Description

(No-Model.) V
J. GARDNER. HAND STAMP.
No. 583,287. Patented May 25, 1897,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GARDNER, OF FLEETWOOD, ENGLAND.
HAN D-STAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of. Letters Patent No. 583,287, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed December 8,1896. Serial No. 614,891. (No model.) Patented in England March 21, 1896,N0. 6,265.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN GARDNER, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Knott End, Fleetwood, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful I'mprovements in Hand-Stamps, (patented in Great Britain March 21, 1896, No. 6,265,) of
' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand-stamps such as are used for indorsing and for other similar purposes; and its object is to provide means whereby such stamps are prevented from forming impressions which are heavier or thicker in one part than in another.
In carrying this invention into effect the handle of the stamp is loosely, movably, or flexibly connected to the plate carrying the printing-surface and is preferably in contact with it at one point only, the invention consisting in certain details of construction, as are fully described hereinafter.
A convenient method of constructing a hand-stamp according to this invention consists in attaching the two parts together by the means illustrated by the accompanying drawing, which represents the lower part in vertical section and the upper part of the bandle in elevation.
The base of the handle has a circular recess formed in it concentric with the axis of the handle. In this recess there is fitted a short india-rubber tube T, the upper end of which is closed except for a small hole through which the round-headed screw S can be passed into the handle, as shown. It is advantageous to interpolate a metallic washer 7 between the end or head of the screw and the blank end The plate P, upon which of the rubber tube.
the rubber or other printing or indorsing surface E is formed or attached, has at the center of its upper surface a circular boss B of such dimensions that it fits the rubber tube T and just bears upon the round head of the screw S. The tube may be cemented upon the boss B by means of shellac, marine glue, or the like. IVith this construction it will be seen that the pressure will be transmitted from the handleto the center of the printing surface, even when the handle is held at an angle from the vertical, and that the print ing-surface need not be exactly at right angles with the handle in use as in ordinary stamps.
The construction illustrated may be considerably modified, but so always as to have a flexible connection between the handle and the plate and only a central point of contact, if any. 7
Having now described my said invention, what I claim is- In a hand-stamp the combination of a handle having a short elastic tube closed at one end except for a central perforation, a round headed screw passing through said perforation to hold the tube in the end of the handle, an impression-plate provided with'a circular central lug, said lug passing into said tube and being secured to it, and the head of the screw impinging against the center of the lug, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 30th day of October, 1896.
JOHN GARDNER.
