Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICEe OLIIF VOLIERTS, OF SAO CITY, IOVA.
DETACHABLE SHELVING FOR WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,245, dated May 11, 1897.
Application filed August 19, 1896. Serial No. 603,278. (NO model.)
Be it known that I, OLIIF VOLIKEETS, a Citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sac City, in the county of Sao and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Shelving for Windows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an ornamental device of simple, cheap, strong, and durable construction that may be detachably supported on either the inside or outside of a window-frame to hold potted flowers or the like.
My object is further to provide a device of this kind having the shelves so arranged that they Will not interfere with each other,
- and that flowers held thereon will have good exposure to light and air, and so that each edge of each shelf will be supported direct from the window sill or frame, and hence be capable of carrying a great weight, and that any shelf or the entire device may be easily and quickly removed Or placed in position and when in position will not interfere with the ordinary operations necessary around a window.
My invention consists in the construction of the frame for holding the shelves and its arrangement and combination with the other parts, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows the complete device applied to the inside of the window, as in practical use. Fig. 2 shows a side view of one of the lorackets or frames.
Referring to the accompanyingdrawings, it is obvious that both Of the brackets are identical in shape and construction, so that but one will be hereinafter described. Each bracket is composed of one main part and three braces. end vertical and extends from thence horizontally outward to form a support A for the upper shelf. From the outer end of this shelfsupport A the rod extends clownwardly and outwardly at an incline. This part is indicated by the reference-symbol A The rocl then extends straight inward in a horizontal plane to form a second shelf-support B. The rocl is continued downwardly and outwardly The main part has its upper and said part is indicated as 13 and extends to a third horizontal shelf-support C. At the inner end of this part the rod extends vertioally as far as its end portion, wl1ich is bent horizontally to rest on a window-sill. This vertical part is indicated by the symbol 0 and the horizontal part by 0 The end of the rod beyond the part 0 is designed to receive a number of braces hereinafter described. This rod rnay obviously be connected With a window-frame loy resting the end 0 on the sill and placing the upper end A in a screw-eye D, which is prev-ionsly sorewed into the frame at the proper height.
I have provided means whereloy each edge of each shelf-supporting part is braced directly from the window-frame, so that comparatively light metal may be used and a strong support for the shelves be provided.
F indicates a rod having a loop formed in each end, one end of which is connected With the end 0 and the other encircles the main rod at the outer end of the part A indicates a like rod secured at 0 and encircling the outer end Of the horizontal part B, and F indicates a like rod connected witl1 the part 0 and witll the upper end of the part ]3 The rods F, F and l' are held on the end O by means of a nut H.
The shelves are preferably slatted and have .at their ends double cross-pieces J with a space between them designed to receive the main rocl or shelf-support. They are indicated by the reference-symbols :1 It is obvous that any shelf may be readily removed.
When placed on the interior of a window- Sill, the lower shelf is held clevated a considerable distance above the door. Hence it will not interfere witl1 sweeping or cleaning the lioor, and access may be easily had to the window by removing the entire device, which will rest on its own base.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure -by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is-
Detachable shelving for windows, comprising two identical brackets eacl1 composed of a main rod having its top designed to enter a sorew-eye, a horizontal shelf-supporting part at the top, .a part inclined downwardly and outwardly, la second horizontal shefsupportng part extending nwardly, a part extending downxverd1y and outwardIy, EL third horizontalsheIf-support extending n- WELI'dIy, ri, part extended upwardly, then horizontally nward and iinal1y at r ght angles horizontaly, three braces each having a, 1oop in each end, the lower loops enerong the lower end of the main I'Od, au nut for holding them in pace, the upper ends of sad rods enerong, respectivey, the outer end of the upper sheIf-hoIding part, the' outer end of the second shelf-holding part and the upper end of the part that leads downwardly from the second sheIf-bo1der, and three shelves 15 designed to rest upon said sheIf-holders, substantally as and for the purposes stated.
